Hi,
Can anyone suggest some DIY SS pre-amp kits that include everything? Same level of commitment as the ACA or a Bottlehead kit. You get all the parts and just build.
I came across the Akita kits, but it is annoyingly large (I don't know if it's any good or not). Small and simple. 1-3 inputs, output, that is it.
Or...the Schitt Sys is $50 and it appears it should work for this application (between a fixed RCA out and either an amp or powered monitors).
Context is this is for a computer audio system.
Thanks!

OK, in the spirit of scope creep. I also needed a DAC (coming from a gaming PC with optical out, and also USB of course). So thinking at this point I might as well suck it up and get a Schitt Asgard with the Multibit DAC ($400).
This will make redundant a Rotel integrated amp I am using, and the same of that should cover the Asgard and then some.
Hope the Asgard and ACA make a good pairing for SS computer speaker use.

I was getting ready to sell my Rotel receiver, but it just failed for no apparent reason.
Probably not worth bothering fixing it.
Good luck with that Schitt, hope it works out well for you.

That's lame! Mine is a RA-12 with all the goodies (DAC, phono, USB, etc.) and it's replacement (much the same) is $1,000, so figure I should get enough to cover the Schitt. I used to have one of the basic Peachtree models and ended up selling that for the Rotel, now the Rotel is leaving. Just need something more well suited to small-scale use.
I have not ruled out using a tube amp, but if I do that it will need to be something with 'disposable' tubes that cost nothing (like $10 EL84's that I could burn out every year and not care).

Don't see any reason why this wouldn't work well. I've driven the ACA directly from my computers sound card, and it worked fine. What are your desktop speakers?

Current speakers are these: Fostex P1000-BH Horn Cabinet Pair
But can see upgrading or changing it up. It could be something like a pair of BBC style monitors or some other small 2-way bookshelf. Or, I could see doing another full-range thing.
I also have a pair of powered JBL monitors I would try out, but while they sound really, really good, not quite the sound I am looking for.

The Akitika PR-101 (and now PR-102) is outstanding. Built mine over a year ago and I have zero complaints. I built the full featured version (phono, headphone, remote, etc.) and I couldn't be happier with it.
Glad you are loving the Akitika. I'd be all for it, just seems to be overkill (size and features) for my computer system. I'd love to see a Mini Akitika Pre!
