I am just checking to see if anyone has a need for a device this crazy, as I think I want to change/upgrade.
It is a combination remote controlled balanced preamplifier and 6 channel volume control.
The preamplifier section has 5 inputs, 2 are balanced. Because of some limitations to how it is designed there are actually only 3 available inputs, but more could be added.
Basicaly, think of this as one balanced switch, that can switch both the + and - of a balanced signal, plus a 6 channel attenuator, 4 of them can be used to volume control a stereo balanced signal, or they can be used all separately for 6 channels of combined volume control.
It is all housed in a very nice enclosure, with a front pannel volume display and input indicator.
This is all based off of the welborne labs kits:

The sound is very very good, but I am thinking of doing a TAP based main preamp and migrating this to a TAP type system as well.
The whole thing cost me quite a bit:
Each stereo attenuator board (3) were 78 apiece, each input selector (2) 80 apiece, plus the base price for the controller, power supply, display was 261. The front pannel is custom machined, as is the rear.
I'll let the whole thing go for $600.00
Even if you just use this for a stereo volume control, it is worth it as it is very good sounding and very neutral. The step size is 1/3 of a dB, so it is perfect for high efficency systems. There is no gain, so it will only get as loud as your source conected straight to your amp.
