FS: Denon DL160 with broken cantilever

Just what the title says. Low hour DL160 with a broken cantilever. It sheared right off at the entry to the cartridge. The remainder of the cartridge appears perfect. Had I left the stylus guard down this probably wouldn't have happened, but...(hey, it could have been worse, it could be an encrypted hard drive with $220 million in bitcoin on it)

I have the original box and paperwork, but there are some bits of plastic from the internal plastic box that are missing. The external cardboard box is mint if that's important to you.

I am accepting offers. Please offer whatever you think it is worth. I will accept the best offer by Friday (Feb. 5). Shipping is paid by the buyer at cost. I am in the Boston area.

Again, to be clear, this cartridge must be repaired and does not work as is.

Pictures (I hope this works).

I hope this is good enough to show what the condition of the cartridge. I don't have a macro lens to get any closer.

I know nothing about cartridge repair. If I did I would have probably have had it repaired, or at least noted where that could be done (and if I knew) what it would cost. I would guess that someone on this forum knows and it would be great if they would chime in.

TBH, I'm rather surprised at the level of snark being displayed here. I was very clear about what was wrong with the cartridge and, as I don't know if/how it can be repaired I've set the selling price to whatever I'm offered. What I got back were rather rude responses. Honestly not what I was expecting on this forum...

Come on!

Hi I am selling my car. It is a red one and it stopped. Since I don't know anything about repair I brought it to a garage. Maybe if I would have checked the engine oil it would not have broken down. I don't know if it can be repaired at all. They told me it would be likely be a very expensive and not so worthwhile repair so I bought a new car. The booklets and the spare tyre are with the car and they are like new, maybe some fingerprints are on them.

Please buy my car. I will accept the best offer by Friday 5 February

Then no pictures... Anyone having such a heavily damaged item would do homework and only have it repaired when it would be possible at all and if the price is acceptable compared to e new cartridge. Sometimes things are damaged beyond reasonable repair costs and they need to go to the bin. In the few seconds I used search machines I found out that repair of this cartridge is more expensive than buying a new one.

One of the best and most reasonable priced cartridge repair services in the states is VAS Audio in NJ. His base price for installing a new cantilever with an elliptical stylus on a Denon DL-103 is about $150.00. I would send him an email or call to make sure that the DL-160 fits into that same price range.
I typically pay about $80.00 for a rebuildable DL-103 or one of it's variants. So far I have two DL-103, a DL-103S, A Dl-103D and a DL-103R. The D and the R still need to be sent to Steve at VAS for his magic.

Jean-Paul...Did I not mention that I was having trouble uploading pictures? Did I not eventually succeed and upload pictures?

Also, if you would have spent more than a few seconds looking you would have learned that the DL160 is no longer available and that there are folks who prize them. Myself, I'm not interested in spending as much on a repair as a new (but probably inferior) cartridge. But maybe there is someone out there who thinks this is worthwhile. Is this possible in your view? Or is it rude of me to ask such a question?

I hope my snark was taken as good fun snark 🙂

I've seen around $150-180 for retipping, but again not sure if they need something to work with. Guessing it can be done.

Also good note on the value for a broken MC, that would put you around $250 for a working cart.

iaRIVR, yea, about $250.00 for a good rebuilt Denon DL-103 is where you want to be. It will have an elliptical stylus instead of the stock conical, considered an upgrade by most. From the basic rebuild you can of course get many upgrades. Steve at VAS is easy to talk to and in my case is only an hour away. His turn around time for two carts was a week.
