I believe everyone has received their jfets now. If you haven't, drop me a line. Have fun with your projects.
I have only 50 matched pairs of 2SK170s left now, but Woody has the 2SJ74s in decent quantity.

arrived yesterday= jfets +some efforts can be seen for sure. Thanks BIll for taking time and matching them for us, lazy DIY'ers 🙂
My attempts to find more genuine J74s at reasonable prices have been unsuccessful. There are some very well made counterfeits out there now, but their parameters are very far off of specs.
Please be careful, the latest are visual dead ringers for the real thing. Stick with the guys on the forum and you should be OK.
ZhouFang has a big pile waiting to be graded so there are still some around.
I still have very well matched 2SK170BLs for $3.00 a pair.
Best, Bill

FEEDBACK NEEDED on J74 pricing.
I have located a supply of genuine Toshiba 2sj74bl jfets @ almost $2.00 pc wholesale. I would need to sell them for $7.50 or so per matched pair to pay for my time and expenses, does anyone have an opinion on whether this is just too expensive, or is it still reasonable for us hackers?

$3.50/ pair for a matching service sounds quite expensive for amateurs.
What type of matching are you doing?

Thanks for replying. I match Idss and also check Vp to be sure they are reasonable Gm matches. When they come out of the same batch they are usually pretty close.
Add up the testing, sorting, packaging time, and expenses and it's definitely not too much, unless I would consider my time worthless.
Individuals naturally can do the same matching on their own if they had access to the parts, but who is going to buy 1000 pieces or even 100 pieces so they can match a few pair for themselves.
I do appreciate you voicing your opinion.

$2.00 pc wholesale, sell for $7.50 per matched pair
1-Outside of the US, average price levels of these parts are much higher.
2-I've seen ads of matched pairs at higher than $5 each, even K170s.
3-J109s are now very rare, non-selected ones are offered by various sources at (+)$15 the piece.
4-Buying JFETs from a regular source adds hefty shipping costs.
5-Ordering across the border adds taxes, overhere 30% standard, or 45% screw you rate.
6-The $7.50 doesn't buy an Idss-selected dual JFET.
7-Buying cheaper means having to buy 100.
8-What's an easy $7.50 compared to total cost, a transformer can do more than +$7.50 due to the global copper rate increase.
9-Folks should be pleased that someone has them, and is willing to do the labor.
(moi, i don't lift a pinky finger for <$125/hr, provided you catch me on the most favorable day, and me likely has more JFET parts than all of you together)

i wouldn't do it again even if i got $20 / piece .
measuring matching packaging , then putting together a spreadsheet . then at least 3 emails/pms per sale . sometimes many more . then packaging filling out customs forms driving back and forth to the post office where you get to stand inline for god knows how long . then more emails .
it really isn't worth doing unless you're nutz like Bill 🙂
also this isn't just a matching service !!!!!! you're forgetting that these are obsolete and most that are offered for sale are counterfeit .
just my opinion .
cheers Woody
That makes a lot of sense Woody and I appreciate all the work. I believe that the USPS will deliver their flat rate packaging to you home, then if you limit your sales to US only you can put the box out in the mail box with the flag up for pickup - not sure if you can get delivery confirmation or insurance this way. Still a lot of work!
If it's just a few pairs in an envelope you can ship 1st class for less than $5.00 anywhere in the world, but no insurance. It's cheaper for everyone, and taking an occasional hit on a small quantity being lost is less painful than filling out all the customs forms otherwise. All my packages arrived safely so far.
Oh yeah, thanks for the feedback, I still have to think about it.

Bill and Woody, you have done amateurs a great service. If everyone knew how difficult it is to measure, match, and then package parts, they would probably be more thankful for your services for doing this.

As you have all worked out years ago I am Nutz.

The prices have not changed since I first offered them.
I hope to shortly offer 2sk170bl at very slightly higher prices and 2sj74 at substantially higher prices.
Woody.
according to you it appears nothing is worth doing if it takes a bit of time and resource.

Well, given their rarity, it sounds fine to me, where do I sign up and what Idss
is available? I need to be able to locate matching 170's to go with...
Russellc
personally i think that if you go for it Bill , you should set your price high enough that they won't be bought in quantity and hoarded by a few , but will be bought a few at a time and be available to many for a long period of time .
and AndrewT pffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffftttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt 🙂

I'm going to make the buy in the morning.
Russell, AFAIK Spencer still has piles of K170s. Blues also. I'll probably get some more, but I still have 60 pair now.
Thanks guys.

I personally don't have a problem with the pricing. I need a few pair of each so I'll watch for when the J74 come in.FEEDBACK NEEDED on J74 pricing.
