Frozen screw magnepan stand

I have a Magnepan that has one of the screws holding the leg to the speaker has
locked solid and will not move. The way it appears there is a T nut which has galled and now just rotates. Question I have is has anyone totally dismantled a 1 series Magnepan in this area and how to remove the T nut and replace it

Thanks in advance.

They're MDF frames. If it is a T nut, remove the lower 'sock' cover (likely held on with heavy staples). This will allow you to see your progress.

I don't recall T nuts in the panels I rebuilt (years ago). If they're steel, pry up the 'lip' to immobilize the spinning assembly with vise grips.

If it's a threaded insert, it can be carefully driven through the MDF in the direction of the frozen screw head, toward the back of the panel.

Pictures of your predicament will help.

Frozen t nut

The t Nut is sandwiched between two pieces of board. IE flat side is on the back side of the front board while the back has the studs (on the T Nut) that dig into the back board. There is not any way of forcing this free from the front because the T nut is larger in diameter than the access hole from the front side. I would say the T nut is 3/4 " in diameter and the front access hole is 1/2 ". From what I can tell the T nut was placed into the back board and the front board later stapled and glued onto the back. Wonder if anyone has these totally apart. Magnepan has no Email service and rather surprised as to the for service .Having
to drill out a steel screw from a speaker of this cost due to poor design, IE they
use a 50 cent t nut in these which the metal resembles pot metal and easy to
score and gall...

When you use a properly sized left handed bit, during drilling the stud will come out on it's own! This usually happens once the bolt head comes off as the clamping pressure is what was binding things. If you do buy the special drills never buy just one Murphy guarantees it will be the wrong size and if by chance it is close enough then it breaks!

That sucks, the threads are about 50% reliable on those, I now run a tap through them before installing, if I have to use them.

Can you use a forstner bit and bore in from the front a full 3/4, or even 1"?
Then you could replace it, and even put a plug into the large hole again.

treads

I might try enlarging the hole from the front as you suggest. I have to wonder why the hole just is not large enough from magnepan to do this to begin with ?
They seem to build quality speakers . I am going to call them later this week
and see what they suggest. Had wondered as to drilling out the screw itself.
Any thoughts ?
