Frontside cone damper: wonder if it could be used to tweak FR

I found the following picture on the Vintage German Loudspeakers web page and it intrigued me:

Anybody care to share their opinion?

If that bolt is free floating I think it would be a sonic disaster, think of a whizzer cone but without the benefits of actually having a whizzer cone.

On the other hand it might be bolted to the middle of the pole piece, in that case it would restrict excursion, that might have been useful for certain applications, but i think that paper holder would wear out pretty fast

I think it's bolted to the pole piece. It's from the days when excursion was around 2mm and surrounds were part of the cone. It's a different take on a spider.

Probably it is bolted to the pole piece in this old driver, but if somehow the paper damper could be beneficial to a certain driver's FR, it could be easy to simply magneticaly secure the bolt on the pole piece, same as with a phaseplug.

Just curious about old tech! 🙂
