I found this pair of ESS 3-way speakers in my parents basement. My dad said he special ordered them when he was in college in the mid seventies. I haven't been able to find anything about the exact specs of them, but from what he said, they were the last cone based speakers that ESS made before going totally over to electrostatic.

I haven't figured out how the grill is secured on there, but it is on there quite well. I don't want to damage them at all, so I'll keep 'gently' trying...

If you get them off, you can build new ones using MDF and the grill fabric and grill guides from Parts Express. Cheap and simple.

ESS used Heil AMTs in the upper models like the one you have. Ofteen they were two way with a 12" woofer and an AMT for the highs and mids. Not bad for the day but you can make something better out of the AMTs.

I had a pair of these in the 1970's.

It did not have the AMT.

It was a two way design. I think it used a 1' Phillips tweeter and a 12"

The grills were guled in place, not removeable.

They sounded quite good in there day.
