Hi guys, has anyone had experience with the Fostex T500a tweeters. These were to top Fostex until they introduced the mk11, which are something like $1000 each. I can get a pair of the earlier ones for half this, yea second hand but I don't think they wear out....
What do you think guys?
Cheers

Even at half the price it's waste of your money. Its your money, do as you like.

Your pick for a high efficiency tweeter to go with my horn's?
nzlowie,
I have tried the T500Mk2 in my horn system and they sounded great but have no experience with older model. My horn system consists of :
Mid bass---pair of Altec 515b's per channel in parallel in a 70hz hypex horn that I made.
Low mids---Classic audio field coil drivers Be diaphragms in a Sierra Brooks 250Hz tractrix solid mahogany horns.
High mids--- Custom field coil driver (Jeffrey Jackson) using JBL Be diaphragms in custom tractrix horns I made.
Tweeters---- TAD ET-703 in a custom aluminum horn that I made. The TAD was slightly better than the Fostex but only by direct comparison.
Subwoofers---2 TC Sounds LMS 5400's X 2 working dual opposed in a 9 cu ft. sealed cabinet, very heavily braced powered by Crown I-tech 5000hd amps strapped to mono.I like these amps as it has built in DSP and crossovers. The subs cover 12hz. to 60hz. and rolls off 48db. per octave at 60hz.. The system is about 108db one watt sensitivity and the horns are driven by Art Audio Adagio mono blocks with T100 tubes or custom 845 mono blocks with silver transformers. To say this system sounds explosive is an understatement !!!
All the horns are using 6db crossovers with top passive components.
I just bought a pair of new Raal Lazy ribbon tweeters (at a stupid cheap price) to try in the next couple of weeks but I will have to rearrange the entire system so I am not looking forward to doing so. I will have to reweld some parts of the horn supports.
If I were you, I would go for the mid sized Raal ribbons judging from reports from friends of mine who's ears I trust. I still think the TAD tweeters are KING but the Raal tweeters are definite contenders and currently available. Good luck.

If you don't want them, let me know where you can get a pair of T500A's for $500. At that price, they're a steal (if well kept and not oxidised/dented/demagnetized/abused/etc.)
M.
EDIT: Found them, here.
Pity the website only allows residents of NZ and AU to register and bid :-(

I have an account but the auction has closed, do you want me to ask for a relist?
I'd ask them to list them on Ebay instead.
Depending on the asking price I might then be tempted.
Have you decided on what you'd like to try mate?Interesting, thanks. I'll see what I can find.

Well.... after lots of reading and emails I decided on the Faital pro HF108R and a pair of Martin's hf horns. Looked very closely at the radians but a couple of guys I spoke to said the berilium was the one to get but they're around $600us each so a bit too steep for me .
The other advantage of the Faital pro is that they're available locally, will be here on Monday - pick up the horns on Monday as well.
So will have some new toys to play with.
Just going to go with a 1st order around 7500hz, below this they're sounding pretty sweet. Just need to give them that top end sparkle. This might be the final move. (Famous last words!) ...... maybe a Raal ribbon...

Those Faital drivers look good on paper. Will be interesting to see what you think. Keep up in the loop mate.
One thing I liked about the faitals was they have a polymer dome, at lot of the others have titanium domes which aren't really liked by many. I think the radians were next choice. Those Faital drivers look good on paper. Will be interesting to see what you think. Keep up in the loop mate.
The other idea if I find that time alignment at these frequencies 7500hz and up isn't an issue is to cut into the outer face of the horn and mount a Raal ribbon...... I have an old 340 horn here I can cut and play with to try the idea. I recon it would look way cool and work well (apart from time alignment if that is an issue)
I've read that the brain can't allocate enough neurons fast enough at these really hi frequencies to get all the information to calculate timing. Don't know if this one is true or not..... if it is then with my brain that should drop to well under 5k!
Just a bit expensive to try, maybe buy some cheap ribbons to see how it works before jumping right in.

Beryllium would be good but it's a big leap of faith without hearing them for yourself first. I'm with you there. I've not seen another system in Hobart with compression drivers to be able to gauge any other than the pairs I own. Same in Perth while I was there. Only Tuyens system really. The 465 radians (aluminium diaphragms) will be my next pair I think.
Might be worth having a chat to Pat from WAR audio (tell him I sent you) about ribbon tweeters. Sounds like he's selling some stuff off at the moment. He has plenty of crazy stuff there. You never know your luck. Thursday night at about 5pm is a good time for his shop.
