Been repairing an R-8 for a customer. Finished the repairing tape transport, and now troubleshooting the complaint about the meters 'flaking out'.
Sure enough, when the unit is set to record ready, the meters display input signal as expected. But wait five minutes and then the light show begins ---bargraph LEDs start flashing at random for about 20 seconds, then all go dark and stay that way.
It is repeatable and the time frame is five minutes.
I've tried heating the ICs to see if it's a thermal problem, but heat has no effect. Tried flexing the boards, but no effect. Tried reflowing solder connections, but problem remains.
The curious part is that without cooling down, a simple power cycling resets the whole process. It will display levels for another five minutes and then go to the random flashing light show.
Is this a firmware bug? This doesn't seem like something I can fix. It seems "programmed" into the display, given the consistent five minute timing til the event takes place.
Does anyone with an R-8 have any ideas what this "feature" is intended for?

I have an R8, but I don't remember if mine does that I recall something funky about it when I go into record mode and sent it to the shop many time and they never fixed it.
I was always able to play and record just fine, but there is some mode about record monitoring for punch in's that I never got the hang of, maybe this is the mode you are experiencing.
And had some feedback issues like it wasn't switching properly, it could have been they way I had it routed through my mixer as well.
So, I never use that function since I can never ever get punch in's to work for me, The same with my MSR-16, I have screwed up few recording because of it and had to make the band do it again telling them not to screw up this time because I don't do/like punch in's.
jer 🙂
