Hi-
I have been mouling over a full range design seems like forever now. I was convinced that a 4-way is the only reliable way to achieve a full range. Now I think that a 3-way can be sufficient... The Fostex F300A and F400A have really cought my attention, because these are high sensetivity, and cover such a wide range. They can be used in a 2-way config while I am saving up for the rest of the system, and can be finally used to cover mid-bass as well as the last 2 octaves... These 2 drivers make a dedicated mid-bass seem totally redundant and a waste. What do you think? The only problem is that I have never seen these drivers used with a ATC. Will it sound good together, or is ATC better off with a VOLT bass? Next, what tweeter would be better with an ATC, a Scan Speak Ring radiator, or a Seas excell dome, with better propogation at high frequencies? Please advise.
Thanks.
P.S. The TAD bass units seem very similar to the Fostex, but somewhat cheaper in price. Does anyone know how these will compare?

Ouch... those are serious money... but also look VERY nice. We are currently working on a design using the Fostex FW227, which althou much more modestly priced is still a very nice extended range driver. We are crossing them at 2k to Heil ribbons.

Re: Re: Fostex, ATC, Seas... General design question - Please advise.
Did not see the FW227 on their site or on Solen. What about the FW305? Any idea on how these compare to TADs? Based on cosmetics alone, they look identical!

FW227 is discontinued... i suspect almost any of their drivers are good. Sometimes a bit hard to work with because of the low Qs. I have no expereince with TAD, so can't make any comment.
Foster is a huge OEM, i wouldn't be surprised if some of the TADs were built to spec based on Fostex parts.

After a closer look, I think the F305 or F405 is a better option for a 3-way, and much cheaper too. Thanks! (Seems like the F300A and F400A are better off in a 2-way config.) But that coated ceramic cone and the Alnico Magnet are very very tempting

There is no question that peoperly done there is some magic with alnico...
