Conanski, i'll start by apologizing for the slur
not upset so much as wondering how and why my statements are being misunderstood/misinterpreted.
the very first sentence in your post after quoting me makes the implication that i say distortion kills speakers.
had that statement been worded:
"so what would stop a "drunken idiot" from creating "a gross overload condition" at the mixer stage and send it along to powered speakers?"
would you still have quoted it?
using terms like distortion and grounding seem to open debates/arguments that are fundamentally semantic in nature.

the topic was with respect to creating adverse operating condition which can do damage.
and to try to restore context i made that statement to Enzo to illustrate that even the best intented and designed limiter/protection system can still be hurt by not respecting design limits.
i have a BSS DPR 402 comp limiter and two QSC mx 1500's in my repair pile that need their input stages rebuilt because of a "drunken idiot" (and that idiot was working with a national headlining act and should have know better)so my experience with respect to this is different. thankfully the 402 for the most part did it's job and the repair pile isn't bigger!

to others who seem to have not read the entire thread and seem eager to join a slag fest fueled by failure to give latitude to context...have a nice day!

I have a DJ friend who hires out gear and has the same problems.
His solution is to turn down gains throughout the system in order to prevent gross overdrive, however this reduces sound quality/SNR etc.
Maybe there is a solid market for a little inline pre-settable tamper proof compressor/soft limiter gadget box at the inputs of each powered speaker or power amp channel.

Dan.
