Focal Midrange Drivers

Hello members,

I wanted to make this post because I have noticed that I am not the only one looking to use Focal drivers as a midrange. I also noticed that others as well are looking for suggestions as there are many models from Focal to choose from.

Lets use this post as a medium for to share there experiences with Focal drivers, (Pros,Cons,Recommendations,Cabinet Size,Crossover, etc. and the model used).

I believe this will be beneficial to all.

You'll get many different answers.... oops, I guess not
judging by the lack of response. People fear to give out
their subjective opinion?

/hehe

I like the old 7K2 but that part # is replaced with this one
I believe -> 7K6411. I think it's useable down to ~200hz.

I didn't like the Audiom 6WM no matter how many times
I listened. Other people love this driver. Others love
the larger diameter 'W' cones for midbass :hehe:

I ended up choosing the PHL midrange because I enjoy
the 'out of box' sonics. Seems to work well with simple
crossovers. I don't hear any obvious nasties operating them
full range like other drivers do (that require exotic crossovers
to tame the sound).

PHL 1120 or 1660 (6.5") is a good one, but only really useable
down to 300hz. They have other products I have not tried,
reports of the PHL 1240 are good, it goes lower in useable
frequency at the sacrifice of sensitivity vs. the 1120.

Best down to...

Hello,

1. Best mids I ever used are Audax PR170M0 down to 500Hz (designed by the now PHL director)

2. PHL 1220 (better than 1240) down to 50Hz

Focals are impressive initially but contrived sounding in the end if you are shooting for ultimate naturalness.

Audax PR170M0

Lower cost than PHL 1120 and practically identical sonics, it's a
keeper.

I still prefer the higher xmax, higher power handling and smaller
box requirements of the 1120, but it cost more. /hehe/

Natural is a good word to describe the sound. 😎

Any recommendations for a bass driver to match the PR170m0. I'm looking for a bass driver for a three way. Does anyone have experience with the PR330m0. I want to maintain the midrange quality of the PR170, but still would like to get down to the 30's.

I currently have Scan-speak 8546 mid woofers mounted MTM in a a vented enclosure and the bass is good for 7 inch drivers. I would be happy with bass this low and high efficiency.
