The Pentium was the first superscalar processor; it used two parallel execution units. Some people likened the Pentium to being like a pair of 486s in the same chip for this reason, though this really isn't totally accurate. It is really only partially superscalar, because the second execution unit doesn't have all the capabilities of the first; some instructions won't run in the second pipeline. In order to take advantage of the dual pipelines, code must be optimized to arrange the instructions in a way that will let both pipelines run at the same time. This is why you sometimes see reference to "Pentium optimization". Regardless, the performance is much higher than the single pipeline of the 486.

The speculation I find interesting is we might never have found doping, like most genius ideas they look simple looking backwards. A further specualtion is that everything we see was already known in 1947 although impossible to make then. Maybe this is why the everyday things we buy are all part of getting to the goal.
Venus I think you are very right about what you say. I hadn't quite seen it from that direction. I had a 286. It took 30 seconds to give the graph from Burr Brown Filter Pro programe. I then had the 486 I think and it was instant. I still use Filter Pro in an updated form. I still love DOS graphics. I mostly use XP as I like it ( not safe now I guess ). 7 is OK 8 and 10 , not sure. I also use Linux on my laptop. It seems to keep it alive.
Of all the things where I tried to find the Elephant in the room, this one was difficult. In fact one might say the Elephant was saying it to be true. I really don't know, how could I? In history we mostly should say " I wasn't there". If you do that test you will find most of what you think you know you don't. You have to trust another person who was there. In science test everything, it is so much fun to know you were there.

I've always found that while building vintage computers that they are so painfully slow that I easily get bored with them and give up because they can no longer do the same things which I used to be able to do. The novelty wears off very quickly shortly after I've completed building the computer and I invariably come crawling back to my current fast pc.
For example I've built an AM2 system intending to run XP on it for vintage gaming, but I can do the vintage gaming through steam on my current pc, so therefore the vintage pc is useless.
I've also built an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ pc. which was no slouch in its day, with AGP graphics, high end AGP card. Yet its still too slow for what I want to do on it, which is play games, I can easily use my current modern day pc for that.
Plus the hard drives are so small that they range in the 100's of gigabytes. Trying to use a 1TB hdd on a Socket-A PC is ludicrous.
I even have a Pentium-era Socket 7 Cyrix 333 system with tons of ram. Still cannot find a use for it, even if it was running DOS, my brain just goes, hell no I'm not screwing around with this and I say that in my mind because all I'm doing is simple file transfers and editing. Hell I can do file transfers in a full GUI inside of explorer, I don't want to screw around with DOS...
The point is, no matter how hard I want to get back into vintage computing I think its a massive waste of time. This is why I believe that there are no time travellers in our time, because they think that time travel back into the past is quite literally a waste of their time and that nothing in our past has really mattered on the grand scheme of things.
Can you imagine a time traveller from the future with all of the modern conveniences of their time going back in time and having to buy ice from the back of a truck just to keep his ice cooler cool?
Can you imagine someone with a smart phone going back to a rotary dialler?
The point is, unless there is an incredibly important reason to travel back into the past there are no time travellers in our past. Even going to majorly important events such as 9/11 would be dwarfed by future disasters in their present day. There may very well be a major event in the future that dwarfs 9/11 so therefore why bother going back to the piddly little thing that was so incredibly important to us? It doesn't even register on a future individuals radar.
So therefore if we can surmise from that, that is also the reason why we have no alien visitors to our planet. They just don't care or bother to interact with such a primitive and boring society. If anything the reason why the alien spacecraft crashed at Roswell was because they were so bored with watching us screw around with vacuum tube technology and wanted to see what would happen if they introduced the transistor.
Boredom is an incredibly powerful motivator which most people underestimate. Assuming they are watching us at all.
It could very well be that we caused the crash at roswell due to high powered early radar systems looking into deep space. If their shields were down at the time a radar signal could very well cause havoc with online computer systems but believing that that occured would mean that you would have to believe that they couldn't bring their shields up in time, and that I cannot believe.
So surmising from that either the crash at roswell was deliberate on their part or one of their pilots was inexperienced. "It was my first day". etc.
There is just no chance in hell that we could've caused the crash, not in a million years. The amount of radiation in even local space is far and above what we could've put out into radar systems in the 1940s.

That's very true.
If the space craft used fusion then local radiation should be limited to a high burst with 15 minutes danger period. When I got married in 1983 my boss put the formulea for that in my wedding photo book. He was working with JET at the time with Sony.
My speculation to suit my friends who were wanting it to be true is this. It is virtually impossible for anyone to travel 100 light years and not even easy at 0.8C locally ( about 13 years to our nearest neighbour allowing for slowing down ? ). If the aliens live co-axially with us then it is possible and seems to suit some thinking ( Quantum Paradox could be showing it, I have no idea ). My feeling is these aliens might find what we do highly dangerous to them. They might be waiting to see how bad it gets before a more dramatic visit. Maybe the stupid things we do will collapse many universes. They from the little we know seem neither friendly nor unfriendly. Maybe Einstein took us too far too quickly. For Einstein read all the others who made the bomb.
Venus. For these friends I will with your name added say I speculate the crash was deliberate as they like you knew we need to know these things like computers. The bomb had gone off and without computers how were we to live with that threat. Some of the aliens had to die to save us.
It's better than the Batman story I think. Everything is fiction except in very rare cases. There is no such thing as fiction really. It asks us could it happen. The question is real.
Venus. I am 61 and lived near USAF Upper Heyford. My mother tells me I truely understood the Cuban crisis, she hated that. I spent many days watching the bombers flying non stop with tail shutes to slow them for landing. It was a mad time. I think I even undersood how the bombs work. It's the sort of thing my dad unthinkingly would tell me if I asked. He taught Radar in the RAF. I was up to speed with the workings of Radar aged 4. Dad even said how to cook with it. He was the last person who could use CH radar. The RAF used ESP tests. My dad could see aircraft in noise. ESP not always meaning ghosts. He went to Licester to study ESP and how the world sees it. The RAF believed it useful. That's all they had in 1950.

For years I have been using a Dos programme to send G Code to a small DIY CNC converted lathe, milling machine, plus a purpose built engraving machine which will be convertible to a 3d printer.
Arduino is something I should think about, but not yet, Dos works for me, plus I have a number of pre xp computers. Even a 286 with a co-processor would work.

For the last 10 years, I have used a computer system which ran DOS 5.
The company tried to migrate the program to Windows 2000 but it could not be made to run properly so back to DOS.!!

The scary thing about all of this is that they may not have been aliens at all they may instead be locals but with a time machine and paradoxically have come back in time to prevent WW3 (Nuclear war in the 1960s-1990s). That becomes even more true when you think just how nukes were looked at as a conventional warhead used in a battlefield environment alongside other nukes.
The aliens that crashed at Roswell could very well have been our long distant descendants.
It may not hold up to scrutiny these days but I had a look into the supposed time traveller John Titor and I thought his facts were right in line with what a time traveller would do and act in our time period. And the fact that he appeared in our time line just before 9/11 occurred is either incredibly coincidental or just further proof.
The statements that he was a part of the military in 2036 just adds more credence to it because I don't see any private citizen ever having access to a time machine. I'm sure that if a government was to ever exist now and into the future they wouldn't want terrorists to get ahold of the technology and that fact would be true now as it would be hundreds or thousands of years from now.
John Titor - Wikipedia
The only downsides to his story is that he came to this time period for a pit-stop before he went on to 1970s america to look for a new IBM 5100. I'm 100% sure that an IBM 5100 could have easily been manufactured in their time period and that even in 2036 (the year that he came from) there would be a few IBM 5100's still kicking around amongst collectors, so the whole idea that he came back to 2001 then to the 1970s is truly fiction. But you could always ignore that and just believe that he had his reasons to lie to us, I mean the guy works in the military, he doesn't want his true mission to come out to the public even if it was in 2001. But still I doubt it. Either his story was complete fiction from beginning to end or he was lying and just fobbing up a cover story to tell us folk about his real reasons for being in our time period(s) so his mission doesn't get cancelled before it even began because he told everyone his mission in 2001, that information would come back to bite him in 2036 even before he was ready to go on his mission.
But John Titor believed (correctly) in the multi-dimensional time theory of time travel, wherein each decision we make changes the outcome and creates another dimension and another and another depending upon which decisions we made in the past.
I find that the whole idea of having to transfer the time machine from one car to another to fit into the car styles of each time period quite ingenious and stinks of something that an engineer would think of to do. There are many good reasons to have a time machine in a car, Not only do they have a vehicle to easily hide the time machine with out of peoples view but they also have a safe metal box which will safely allow them to traverse each time period through whatever mechanism they are using. Its the perfect device for not only a fictional story but also a realistic one.
Their statement that they require oxygen while travelling from one time period to another also screams of engineering and practicality.
In either case, fiction or not, the practicalities of how the time machine worked and how he traversed time are realistic enough for me to believe in the story.
He also states that he was sent here to shape his own timeline but that he failed to do so, however from our viewpoint he did, we never had a civil war that started in 2004, we never had a World War 3 in 2015. At least not yet. That either means that he suceeded in shaping our own timeline and the government took notice of his posts in 2001 and failed to shape his own, or his own time period is vastly more technologically advanced than our own, I'm of course citing that CERN discovered miniature black holes "sometime around 2001". Considering that John Titor supposedly arrived in January of 2001 maybe he told the government what would happen if the news of the discovery of miniature black holes would do, or what would happen in 2004 if they did something very bad in the middle east after 9/11 occured. In either case it all stinks of correct timing and unknowable truths which we may never know because the government could be keeping it from us for our own good.
The idea that the aliens at roswell weren't aliens but were rather time travellers from our own earth stinks also of covering-our-buttiness. We would have a far greater reason than an alien species from another universe to meddle in our past. Not only does it prevent the extinction of our species but it also prevents the extinction of the entire planet's species. Two aliens died in Roswell, so the story goes, but who would rather die to save humanity but humans? So there you go further proof for this theory.

This appears to be morphing into the next Blowtorch Preamp thread...nearly 98,000 posts and everything is discussed except the preamp. I suppose flat earthers would argue with the classical form of the gravitational equation:
F = GMm/R^2
since that is the inexorable force that draws large astronomical bodies into spherical shapes as the minimum energy configuration. Has any flat earther explained the FE theory of gravitation and how it allows for stable non-sperical large planets?
One of the flatties I know keeps telling me that it's not a thing called 'gravity' that helps power my model gliders..... it's weight.
Venus. You are the new Jules Verne and well done ( good thinking, hope you are right ). I am doing electrical testing work today so must be brief. TT Earthing system. 2R8 ground rod to water pipes ( 1M38 earth to live 3M8 earth to neutral. Not bad. I love TT. Ideal allowed hi fi system. Dorset is very damp. France I think allow 100R. I was forced to do electrical engineering at the RAF college. Now it's what I do. I count myself as an electronics person. No one else shares that point of view.
On Windows 7 I ran DOS ( might have been 8 ). I liked 7. My son took back that computer and I run my reserve XP. This is Linux as for some my son says it runs the graphics card and windows won't. I have no idea.

Venus. I was asked to look at John Titor . The laser showing time distortion was obviously a pipe with total internal reflection bending a light. People seemed to take that photo as proof.
Just read up on him.. An amusing little hoax!
The Usenet science kooks like Alexander Abian and Ludwig Plutonium were fun in the day too. Once you get your brain around what would be necessary for alien intervention or time travel to remain essentially invisible throughout history the absurdity of it all is obvious.

Science fiction can become fact. Often the person knew someone or something which suggested the next step.
Shakespeare has attracted much speculation. Mostly he did not write the plays. To even begin to say that is nonsense as not one person who could say is alive today. And that is if we choose to believe they tell the truth. Francis Bacon is who the Flat Earthers of that story think did, To add my own view which I think must be correct. Shakespeare was gifted. His theater a place worth visiting. Surely Bacon and others taught him by requesting stories with their input?
Forward in time to the early 1950's in Grove Wantage UK and another Francis Bacon, The link is NASA as Bacon took forward an idea from the early 1800's, the fuel cell. This Francis Bacon claiming to be a descendant. He was boss of Eddy Bowers who I do know. Alas nearing 90 Eddy doesn't remember his past. He never kept his brain working after retirement is the possible the reason. He managed the retirement fund at British Non Ferrous Metals. If you looked at his life after work nothing would suggest he was Dr Bowers. His son in law said the pension fund was his real work.Very sad.

In the old days we only had 3 channels in Oxford. I bought a very cheap aerial amplifier some chap made in a small ice cream tub. Crude PCB and tuned bar of copper. Our home aerial by chance pointing to Hannington Ch 42 Southern. It worked well and gave me choices. Ironically I was in Hannington twice recently. A friend likes the pub there and the next time a short cut via Aldermaston ( yuk ) to Goring on Thames. I also received 405 line TV from London. Ch 42 was lucky as group C/D aerials for us worked on their limit at 42. 40 something if truthful, 42 the one I remember. Remembering Aliens are said to like to look at our Nuclear stuff Aldermaston is close.
Funny no one said about the Hannington thing from the area, I know a few.
The Nukes aren't at Aldermaston, but they do have a rather spiffy laser there. Sadly too big to put on a shark. Things that go boom are at Burghfield which I can see out my window.
Of course we have no idea what is at RAF Welford. Just a strange exit off the M4 saying 'works access' but clearly capable of taking some VERY large transporters. Conspiracy theorists might say Greenham common was a diversionary tactic.

I know Welford well having worked in Lambourn. Lambourn has a rather good fire service due to W. When I lived in Upper Heyford no doubt about the USAF base having them. Pete who worked for us had worked at Aldermaston.
