Let's imagine you have property in the Florida Keys - inadequate as you might deem it for your particular circumstances, would you refuse to accept assistance from FEMA because they're a mainstream USA agency and can't be trusted?
AFAIC, nothing anywhere should be taken on blind faith - and even though there's much entertainment and amusement to be found, that's especially the case for blanket assertions on chat forums
Scott, this is a famous one. Day of the Triffids. I couldn't find the 1967 version of Quatermass and the pit. Found the trailer. I won't spoil it except to say it has a unique warning and rationalises some of our fears.

Although no more reliable than the Flat Earth nonsense one idea put forward is that the higher powers test the public with nonsense. I have doubts as unless highly targeted it is a waste of time. The Roswell stuff seems to have been a diversion for testing aircraft of which the Blackbird was one. The story is the USA had no idea what of the Nazi secrets went to the USSR in 1945. In topical Korea it was found out that very little had gone East as the Mig fighters lacked refinements that the Germans knew of. True to say from Mig 8/9 via Mig 15 to 17 was a very rapid devellopement. Even so the features of the Lockhead Starfighter were nowhere to be seen. BTW. It is said the Starfighter was a poorly understood good design. The problem was you needed to be instructed by someone who understood it. It could not carry full payload and pull maximum G. This got overlooked and pulled it's wings off. If ever a plane needed Fly by Wire. The Flying Wing also which now is a reality. As far as I know the Flying Wing was already tested in Germany.
It is said this company being forced to step down made the Apollo project possible ( and Concorde ). Forget if NASA went to the Moon, this story beats that and seems to be true. Canada was the most advanced aerospace country circa 1957, certainly in brain power if not in the cash to do it. Uncanny thing is the same day as Sputnik when their beautiful aircraft rolled out. Very nearly 60 years ago ( 4 th Oct ). Even the engines were their own as others were not powerful enough. If I am right the French had them.
Here is a weird twist in the story. The Mig used a BMW 003 engine of the type more typical of what was to be the main engine type during the 1960's. However the British Labour government insisted that Rolls Royce sell the USSR some Nene engines. These were cloned and were the ones used by the early Mig. The irony was the BMW engine was unreliable. One must infer that it wasn't the cloning that caused the problems as the cloned Nene worked fine. My maths teacher built the similar to the Nene engine in the sceince museum. I only know as my friend interviewed him for Talking Books for the Blind, Chris Bartram. We had a Vampire Jet to play with at college. That was a RR clone and only just after the war. Goodness we were " One hell of a good country " as I think Easy Rider said.

nigel - yup the whole CF-105 debacle was Canadian politics at its best 😡 How long did Bomark/SAGE last? - while the arguably highest performing interceptor / bomber of the era - many of whose contemporaries enjoyed decades of service life - was subjected to the wrecking ball . Of course, there's the apocryphal legend that one prototype did escape, but going on 60yrs later, that's likely just a delightful urban legend.

I wonder how long it will be before we have technology capable of identifying junk in space surrounding distant planets, to be able to determine that the planet is occupied.

Those I've seen a few times even in the theater as a teen, both great (love all the Quatermass films). Is there a Hob's Way stop on the tube?
Oddly it is claimed to be a new station for the Central line. Somehow the inside shots can't be as they look too old. However 1967 was the transition time from old to newer world. I had visited France that year and can say briefly France was the most modern country even perhaps compared with the USA. In the Quatermass film the pub shows Colour TV, As far as I know we were two years away from that. France had it's >800 line SECAM until reduced to 625 lines. I saw the better version by chance. It was on a loop system in Paris.

If to suit convention we divided there an island 30 miles from one the other side is suddenly as far as we can go on the flat map.
When I few to Texas a couple of times we flew near Greenland and then over Canada. One can trace the French speaking peoples of the USA as one travels as names like Baton Rogue Des Moins come up. This flight path only makes sense on a globe. USA to London works on a flat map.

The problem is psychology is not a real science, it is mostly observation with outcomes most likely to happen. For example systems psychologists can layout an aircraft to be safer. One example is analogue meters with digital inserts. The analogue says it's not right and the digital says exactly how bad. When pure digital meters were used mistakes were made. Strangely peripheral vision spots the analogue very well. I met a NASA systems psychologist who made sure I understood these things, I had been a bit rude about the validity of his job.
Sadly some think we can go a very long way with psychology, I doubt it is fruitful. Even great marketing successes are often one person making a guess that what they like others will like. We forget the many devices that despite being well thought out fail to sell. The Rubic's Cube was that rare thing that just sold and sold. It is the sort of thing we might all have done except it was very well engineered in the style of Lego. Lego is a very difficult piece of engineering. Very strong that a 4 year old can pull apart that lasts for years.

People are extremely complex, so trying to do science with them is often very challenging. Medicine is complicated for that reason, for example.
Regarding psychology, as time goes on it should increasingly converge with neuroscience, also a fairly nascent field.
However, if you think psychology is useless now you would be mistaken. Modern cognitive psychology is increasing finding application in business, economics, organization and operation of the US military, and of course, to make video games more addicting.

I read up on this 819 line SECAM a few years ago. It was shown on a closed cable system in Paris.We were staying at a private boarding school in their Easter brake in either 1966 or 67. The TV was in the head teachers private rooms which we sneaked into. I think it must have been a test transmission as it was a seascape and seemed to repeat. It was very high definition.
The BBC had prepared for colour by building Band4/5 transmitters. I think in 1962 they did NTSC tests after close down. The BBC much preferred NTSC over PAL, Lucy a lady I did some work for transcribes their old tapes and knows ever system ( 405 line Doctor Who is her work, has a Garrard 401 ). Thay had done a similar test using The Moscow cable system which from memory was 3000 miles " with little degradation". This somewhat confirms the idea that the the BBC was controlled from Moscow, Margret Thatcher certainly had that feeling. My view is NTSC with a locking pilot tone was the better system.
Humble Deer. It is a fiction that the world can be proved to be flat. Just watch a water drop and realize the Earth is much easier to visualize as a hot mass that cooled. The physics to make any other shape defy any likely explanation. If you take the Flat Earth theories 80% can work as they claim at my best guess. 10% are rather complex. 5% are not scientifically easy to accept and 5% are seemingly wrong without any complex reasoning. To have an easy life just look at the stuff like how can an islands simultaneously be both on the East side of a map and the West. Or worse still not on both sides. If one insists on turning the globe into a flat map there has to be a point were two very closely spaced islands seem to be my thousands of miles apart. Looking into space all we see is globes or would be globes.

I'm sure there would be plenty of seasons out of it. As the earth is round they would continue going to the edges of cliffs and proudly proclaiming that this is the end of the earth, then being proven wrong, then moving onto another part of the earth where there is a cliff on a beach front, and be proven wrong yet again.
