My daughter had a Yamaha CD player where the drawer would not open. Being a Sony CD drive (KSS213C) I thought it may be the drive belt but in fact was the disc clamp magnetic field not letting the laser assembly drop and hence stopping the drawer opening.
Simple fix by reversing the magnet ring (item 8) and now functions well. I don't know if this is caused by low use and the platter then magnetises. Maybe putting a CD in when not in use to increase the gap between the clamp and platter.

Keeping a CD in it would definitely affect magnetic grip. Magnetic fields diminish with the CUBE of distance, so a little distance can make a big difference.
