First Watt F1 with Audio Nirvana Super 12?

Uriah, that is very encouraging. But i see you have put them in those nice 2.8 BR cabs (with dual 3'' ports), right? I favor an OB design as it is simpler (it is my first DIY project) and arguably produces the cleanest sound, but i am afraid i won't be getting any decent bass no matter how big i will make the baffles.

Also, why did you choose the F5 amp? I thought F1 is the bass monster that would give the frequency extension that all fullrange drivers seem to desperately need...

As I might have said a bit ago, a friend brought over an 8W tube amp. We never opened it up so probably were running 3-4W. It was loud. It was full of bass and it was the best I have heard since 1987 if emotional impact can be a determiner in how great the sound was.
I can see bass lacking in a OB. Bass Reflex and there is low low low bass but there is not punch. I cant see the F5 not producing the bass that is on the CD the thing has a frequency range from nothing to I think 200kHz or something around there. I think that will do it. Plus the F5 will have 120kuF if it ever feels the need for more power to produce the bass. The ANs are fantastic and as full rangers I really dont know where you are going to get lower bass. Do a 3 way cab with a woofer and a crossover that boosts bass over the other frequencies and you will have a bass speaker but you will miss the clarity that you get with no crossover. Maybe build a sub and power it with a chipamp. I think the F5 will be impressing me in every other frequency so if its bass shy I might not notice 🙂

I do OB with Eminence Alpha's - like it.
To match your 12" drivers, I would use two per side of Eminence Alpha-12A. Double up to give a bass bost. of course this will then be driving 4 ohms or less. BiAMP or F5 it with a X-Over. The 15A's have more better QTS, more better for OB. That's what I use.

Is this graph for Audio Nirvana Super 12? If it is, then it looks a bit disappointing. I was thinking of AN12 Cast Frame in open buffles driven by F1 amplifier, but if performance is similar to AN Super 12 then i doubt i could get any decent bass. And the highs seem more limited than in Common Sense Audio graphs too.

Thats just open baffle for you, nothing to do with the AN12...

Want bass? Bolt that puppy into a Karlson K15. Yeah, I know
the standard 15 hole is too big, but if you can make an open
baffle, you should be able to craft some sort of an adaptor.

That huge 15"

But Uriah, note that the 15" is double the price of the Super 12".

Maybe that will make you feel better.

Hope you are enjoying your AN 12" in the 2.8 cabinet as much as I am.

I'm looking into putting the speakers on some vibrapods to see how that changes the sound. Will report back when that it done. Cheap tweak, and no risk due to their money back guarantee. Anyone else out there tried this, spikes or other mods to cabinets for their ANs?

Roscoeii,
Yeah they are awesome. Even better is with an F5 driving them.. after heating up 🙂 It grabs them by the throat and demands proper bass control. Even better than that is the Wavelength 300B Class A tube amp. I will be building the F5, again, to run these when I get to Texas in a few weeks. Its a great amp for these and then ... oh man.. run the F5 with a Lightspeed. Incredible if you are a detail freak.
And yeah, I wouldnt go back and buy the 15 or the Alnico at those prices. On the other hand I think he has some deal about upgrading. If I ever upgrade I will probably try Lyn Olson's Ariel. Just read a lot about it and think it is a really interesting speaker.

Agree lightspeed was a welcome addition to F5 setup.

Hmm, F3 current source 😎

Magura -is this a recommendation in doing the F3 differently than spec?
I dont think by default the F3 is default is transconductance type. I think I may be way off what your thinking.

I'm certainly intrigued by the Lightspeed and the B1, but don't think a passive will work for me (due to girlfriend/roommates demands that an iPod be able to be used in the system). And on my side I'm reluctant to give up a remote due to dog-on-lap factors.

I'm running a borrowed F1 through the AN 12"s in the 2.8 cabinet. And Wow. Was going to wait until I felt that the speakers were broken in, but what the hell I'll let the cat out of the bag now. The combo (with an Audio Alchemy DLC pre-amp) is fantastic. Hearing so many details that I've never picked up before in albums I've heard countless times before now. And great bass extension, as all F1 graphs Papa has published would suggest.
