First time project for my dad

Hi, I'm new here, but I've been lurking across a few forums for a while now trying to learn more about DIY to build my dad a pair of speakers. He wants something he can take outside on the porch with and listen to in the afternoons now that he's retired. He listens to a lot of Steely Dan, Deep Purple, ELP type music, but isn't much of one to need ear bleeding volume.

After a lot of reading, I was steered away from trying to engineer my own speaker for my first attempt and am now looking at kits. I am thinking doing a Alpair 10.3 or 11ms in a pencil build should suffice as good enough cheap first speaker build, but I would love you input and opinions.

Also not interested in precut cabinets as we have some nice logs we were thinking of of using for this and possible subsequent speaker ideas.
