I'm using a 5" PSOne screen as well. Will try the brightness mod as well when I've got time. So how did you know where to put your pre-condensor (magnifying lens) from the screen and the lamp looslcol? Also what is your light engine made of and does your PJ overheat cos mines does?
Another thing that is easy to do with the psone screen is removing the antiglare sheet. I don't know if you all have read about that, but you just set a very damp paper towel on the lcd for an hour or two, and then peel the sheet right off. Mine came off no sweat. The sheet is translucent, so it should greatly increase image quality.
