First Project

Hi,

I've been reading this forum for a while now as part of my quest to build awesome sounding things (without the cost) and learn some bits about electronics and audio gear along the way.

I was just hoping to get some advice and guidance on my project ideas. I have two in mind, an isolated headphone setup and the beginnings of a cheap multi-room set up. I am planning on basing both on a Raspberry Pi running Volumio (Home - Volumio - audiophile music player) with a hifiberry as the DAC (HiFiBerry | HiFi for the Raspberry Pi and more).

For the headphone project I am thinking I will just buy some headphones as this seems easier than building them (if this is wrong then I would love to be corrected). The current plan is to build a BottleHead Crack OTL because it seems to be good bang for your buck, an introduction to tube amps and a good first build for someone with rather limited knowledge of electronics.

However for the second project (remote audio over the network with two speakers) I become rather stuck, so far I have found (what I hope are) a decent source combination. I get completely stumped by amplification and volume though, is volume handled by a pre-amp and then you also need an amp? Volumio can adjust the volume at the on a software level (or at least it has a volume slider), would it be better to use that and not have a pre-amp so as to minimise the number of components?

Key points:

  1. Does anyone know if a Raspberry Pi with a hifiberry is a good combination?
  2. Is the BottleHead Crack OTL a good first assembly project?
  3. What advice do people have for how I should go about looking into amps and pre-amps?

Many many thanks to any help, I have done a lot of Googling but I got a bit overwhelmed with the technical side and would really appreciate a hand. 🙂
