Hi everyone, I'm about to embark on my first DIY sub. I've been doing a lot of web reading over the last couple of weeks and have decided on a sealed single driver sub. I have a few questions...
Well, before the questions, let me explain what I'm trying to accomlish.
High WAF. (Aka, Small size, Nice finish)
High Musically (I do about 50/50 music movies, but music is far more important to me. Movies is just a nice bonus if that happens)
Low Budget.
Matching a 5.0 set of custom built speakers (I don't have the details on these, the company went under (but the speakers sound nice))
This is what I'm thinking so far:
Box: 16x16x16 internal for about 4000 in3 .75" MDF with bracing.
Driver: Looking at NHT1259 and Titanic MkIII 12"
I'd love more suggestions on drivers that are "musical" in that same kind of range. WinISD is fun to play with.
AMP: Parts Express 250W plate amp no-bass-boost.
Stuffing: Was thinking of batting from crafting store. This would gain me WAF points as she loves the craft store. My question is, how do i know how much to put in? I don't have any real testing equipment, although I do have a voltometer and a radio shack SPL meter (analog).
This will be hooked up to my Marantz SR8000 reciever.
What do you guys think of my musings? How do you think this will perform with music and/or home theater? I know this is probably boring and been asked about 1000 times, but any extra info unique to my case would be nice 🙂
Oh oh, almost forgot .. Room size.. 8' ceilings. 20'x10' LxW with about 75% of one of the long walls opening into Kitchen/Dining.

Have you considered the Peerless XLS 12"?
if you are looking at using the sub more for music stereo subs could also be considered (WAF might not like 2 boxes though). Stereo subs can be a smaller yet they will excite fewer room nodes as they will readiating from different parts of the room.

There are plenty of choices, and all of the commonly used ones can easily be made to be musical. XLS is a great driver. I'd also suggest considering the direct servo kit from http://www.rythmikaudio.com/index.htm I haven't heard it but I would expect it to be more musical than any of the previously mentioned subs. It's quite easy to get just about any decent sub driver into a musical and small box if you use a Linkwitz transform. The direct servo kit is designed for this, but also has a servo to reduce distortion. This and the linkwitz transform are already built in. All you have to do is build a box.
