Hi there, I’m building my first PJ and I’m waiting for my pieces from DIYLABS. I just wanted to make sure of the measurements and if I need the IR glass. I will have the 250W MH kit, a 11x14 piece of Lexan, 2 Fresnel 15.5x15.5 (330 fl) a 15” LCD and the 135mm triplet (450 fl).
Light to fresnel=330mm
Fresnel to LCD=<>20mm
LCD to fresnel=<>20mm
Fresnel to triplet=450mm
I will insert the Lexan between the light and first fresnel but do I really need a IR glass.
I will have two fans to blow cool air in beside the LCD and one fan behind my light to exhaust the hot air. Will this be ok. The PJ will be from 12' to 16' from the screen and I hope to get at least a 100" screen.
Thanks

Will I still have a viewable image in complete darkness with the 250 W bulb? I will have the projector in the basement with no light.
Thanks to all.
Thanks to all.
With 250W, LCD images will not be viewable. Its OK for Overhead Projector but not for LCD. You need 400W metal halide lamp.
Thanks Swolfe23.
I will have a reflector so I hope it will be OK. My basement will be completely dark. I hope to get my parts soon so I can post pics later.

dump the IR glass for larger setups. I've been running my projector without it from the beginning and my brains haven't melted yet. Just make sure your fresnel setup is cool, they will warp and cause problem s if not taken care of. IR is necessary on smaller 7 inch setups because airflow is less. On larger setups a couple fans should be able to move enough air to keep things cool

whoa newby..you live in Ottawa..crazy
I just saw that you live in Ottawa Newby..crazy. I live just over in Almonte. Where did you get your lens and how much did it cost?..find any stores in Ottawa that sell stuff like that. Im making a ps1 projector and im trying to persuade my dad to buy it over the net (80mm Triplet) but I was wondering if you saw any in Ottawa.
Thanks Rob

Hi Rob,
I bought my lens from DIYProjectorCompany. It's the 135mm long throw lens because I'm using a 15" LCD and I wanted the projector to be far enough from the wall. It's $120 US. The only thing I could find so far in Ottawa was a 400watt MH light at Home Depot but no ballist and the Lexon also from Home Depot. If any one knows where I can find a mogul base and ballist in Ottawa I'd sure like to know because DYIProjectorCompany is having problems getting the 250W light I ordered 01/11/06 and as others told me, I'd be better with the 400watt. I know Alan is trying but man, I'm getting anxious. I think the price there is excellent for the 80mm lens and that should be good for you.

Like people are syaing I think with 250W you'll need a good reflector to get a viewable image in the dark.
Currently with no reflector and a 400W lamp my image isn't that bright, although perfectly viewable in low light levels.
I haven't used IR glass, just some UV reflective polycarbonate which attenuates anything below 390nm.
Its been running for 100 hours now with no overheating problems or yellowing.
