Extrapolating from my experience with the FH Mk3 (Frugel Horn for ~4" drivers), the FH designs throw a deeper sound stage compared to other designs like MLTL and BR boxes. I have built the FH-XL and played them with Alpair 10P. The bass goes plenty deep. Some folks might find the top end softer compared to Mark Audio metal cone drivers. I am planning to try out the Alpair 10.3M soon - but the break-in period is pretty long, so won't be able to provide any good listening impressions any time soon. DiyAudio member Chrismmm has the Alp 10.3M in FHXL and has expressed positive feedback IIRC. The Pensil's are also very good designs and easier to build.
Have you heard a pair?
Trying to judge a speaker on it's measurement alone is not very smart. Flat FR is only a small part of the information you need to evaluate a speaker..

Making conclusions based on subjective listening is even more stupid..
There is nothing good with Alpair 10p.. frequency response, THD, CSD.. everything is terrible..
Funniest thing are measurement data from the manufacturer.. it would be nice when someone could be responsible and suffered the consequences for such lies..
what about these drivers?
Mark Audio Alpair 10 Gen 3 - Gold - EACH
they seem to be the upgraded 10p, or am i mistaken?

I dont have much authority on the matter.
but this is about good sound right?
if it sounds good in real world environments, in the ears of experienced 'audiophiles' , do the "measurements" really mean anything.
im after quality real world results.
if you have personally experienced these speakers and have some feedback ide love to hear it.
thanks for your input.

These are the Alpair 10.3M (metal cone) drivers we were discussing about.
They are not an "upgrade" from the Alpair 10P; rather they are the third generation of the MA Alpair 10 driver and hence the 10.3 or Gen 3 monicker.
The Alpair 10P is also similar circa, but Gen 1 of the paper cone Alpair 10.

gotcha.
Measurements are objective.. in case of Alpair 10p it is desperate..if it sounds good in real world environments, in the ears of experienced 'audiophiles' , do the "measurements" really mean anything..
Ears of experienced "audiophiles" are highly subjective.. much more if they have financial benefit..

again.
what do you suggest as an alternative speaker driver/ design?
do you have data other than the one link to support your claim?
are we certain that the measurements taken by the one source of information your have posted are accurate?
where the drivers broken in?
i have open ears, and am willing to listen to reasonable evidence.

Will this driver suit the FHXL? Would any modifications need to be made on the design. Has this been attempted already.
Although I'm looking forward to experimenting and contributing in the future. Currently I want something that is tested and known to produce quality sound. Thanks again
From your data, I have noticed that the SPL is decently lower than the 10p. Again with my limited knowledge, it seems this may be a significant issue. I will be using a 8w p/c SET tube amp. And a broad range of music, alot of which is dynamic in nature. Will I suffer in volume, considering I like my music on the louder side if possible.
Pros/Cons of pensils to FHXL?
i assume better bass from the FHXL?
what are you using to drive these?
thanks
Reading various reviews of FHXL(I have not used them yet) I am convinced that FHXL's are much more nuanced. There are two things that made me go against them 1.My hand skills are not that good to DIY a fairly complex stuff liks FHXL 2.Relatively larger foot print that FHXL'S require(~600mm in length, from memory)
I use and Raspberry pi based Volumio as source with Flac/Aiff files ,NAD 320BEE amp and an M Audio USB pro as DAC.I have used Windows(Foobar) too as the source somehow could not get it to work to my liking.Trust this helps

I have Alpair 10p in a transmission line, they sound wonderful. Excellent match for a single ended tube amp, I'm using a 5 watt KT88 se! I don't know why anyone would say they are a bad driver!

seems all the stink is about published specs which for me is a non issue (i don't hear with my eyes! and if i did there's a whole lot of stuff that measured bad but sounded good to me)

for all we know you could have shares or stocks in your driver recommendation ...
Fane do a couple of good full range speakers.
The Fane Sovereign series 200-LC and 250-TC
I have used both and they sound very good.

I recommend a horn type arrangement, like the Buschhorn. It should work perfectly with the Jordan recommended before, or with Focal FE103E. I built one with a 3" TangBand scaled down to 75%, it works wery well. No T/S parameters and calculations are needed for a horn.
For those who were following this thread, now shutdown, http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/270094-objective-comparison-3in-4in-class-full-range-drivers.html
Due to the generosity of certain members who will be providing me the B80, the Scan Speak 10F, and the Fostex FF105WK to include in the test.
Drivers have been ordered and I will test and post results when ready.
Hi xrk971,
Did you post on this thread by mistake? 🙂
The discussion here is on something else.
I did not recommend horn.. BR or closed box..No T/S parameters and calculations are needed for a horn.
