My name is Jorge Rebollar, and I just ordered all the parts (I think), to build my first diy project... (and this is my first post) it is a Zen v4 and I want to run it Balanced. But I don´t know how?😕
In the writeup of the Penultimate Zen by Mr. Pass it says:
"If you decide to run a pair of the channels balanced you can expect to see about 60 watts into 8 ohms, and the performance is very good."
I want tu rut it balanced and would like to know what changes I need to make to the circuit to make it balanced.
A schematic would be great!
I would also like to know if the following would be a suitable transformer to use in the power supply:
Toroid Transformer 2 x 24V @ 4A ea

I bellive that your question more or less have been answered before in this forum, try and use the search function on "Balanced Zen4".
Hvowever, as i recollect, to build the Z4 balanced, you need 2 boards pr. side - that means 4 boards for an balanced stereo amp.
Your powersupply must be the same voltage rating as in single ended mode, witch means around 35-38 volts on the sceondary outlets. The VA rating however needs to be twice as large - if you are planning on using one trannie for all four boards, it should have at least 800 VA rating. I will be using 2 trannies, each on 750VA for my balanced Z4, but thats just the famous DIY overkill 😀
Your caps after the retrifier needs to have a higher voltage rating that the voltage they are charging - in the article you will see that the voltage is 50 volts after retrifing, so I would go for something like 63 volt caps ( I'm using 4 x 47.000uF, 63 volt caps).
If you use a cap that have a smaller rating than 50 volt, chances that it will blow up in your face is very much existing - dont use the 16 volt caps !!!
Hooking the circuts up balanced should not be a problem either - I have not reached this point in my own construction yet, so dont blame me for eventually errors 😉
You should connect the supply to the boards in the ordinary way, and then tie the input - (negative/ground) together. Then the positive input + from your source to the positive input on one of the boards. Your negative input (-) should be connected to the positive input on the sceond board - thus one of the boards will amplify the positive signal, and the other board will amplify the negative signal. The ground from your source must be connected to the common ground for both chanals.
Hope that made sense to you, if not, then post again.
Again, I'm not sure of the chanal hook up, as I have not done that yet - so if anyone have builded the balanced version, please feel free to correct me 🙂

As I recall the Zen series, particularly ZV4 is clear about
balanced operation. Please take another look at the
series and see if your questions have not been answered,
and if not, please try to ask specifics, and answering will
be easy.
The transformer you mention is either too high or too low.
If you want to go ahead and use it, then I recommend one
transformer per channel with the secondaries running in
parallel to provide 24 VAC @ 4 amps. This will give you about
32 volts, enough for the 10 watt Zen, and if you are running
balanced, I think we can get you to 40 watts into 8 ohms.
