First Build

Hi!
New to the forum and just came across it while searching DIY speakers.
I'm in the process of making some boxes for some outdoor speakers that I've had lying around for years.
It got me thinking about making floor standing speakers for inside.
I currently have some old b&w 3 series floor standing speakers, a sub and a center speaker that I want to move to a spare room with the TV and make the living area more of a social area with just some lounges, a table and great sounding audio!
I'd like to build something much better than my current setup and take my time over the next year to do it.
I've noticed Focal make car audio speakers (which I have) but also do floor standing speakers with drivers that look identical. Are they the same drivers as their car speakers? I was always under the impression that car and hi fi speakers are designed very differently for different purposes.
Alternatively. What brands make excellent components that are for sale. I believe b&w won't sell parts unless it's for repairs.
Aesthetics are also important. I truly love the b&w and focal drivers appearance.

I understand I have a huge amount to learn which is why I've set myself a 12 month target to make these speakers.

Greets!

I seriously doubt it unless there's been a quantum change since I last paid attention to them ~20 yrs ago when their HIFI drivers were some of the best available, though I imagine the main difference is still in the motor's specs and of course mobile audio drivers must be better protected from the environment.

I preferred ScanSpeak back then, though this is based on comparing technical specs and auditioning others DIY speakers as I only use[d] prosound drivers [mostly Altec, now GPA] for high end audio/HT.

All that said, IIRC there's at least one super-fi [in pricing anyway] that uses [used?] entry level [rebadged] Vifa, proving it's more about the cab and especially the XO designs/construction than the drivers in some cases.

WRT to using mobile audio drivers, if you really like the Focal's and don't mind the typically larger cabs they 'demand', then you could do a lot worse if they are at least of the same quality/performance as when they first entered the market.

Car speakers exhibit 4 Ω impedance instead of the standard 8 Ω that is used for hi-fi at home.
Lowering Z ( that's the symbol of impedance) makes the amplifier working hard
and it doubles distortion.

An amplifier designed for high current/low Z load would then require multiple
power devices at its output
and a big power supply ( read transformer size).

Hi,
I've always understood car speakers to be 4ohm and also built for open area mounting but hi-fi speakers to be 8ohm and for enclosed spaces. I just noticed that focal speakers are identical in looks for both car and hi-fi but after more research they are indeed different.

I'd love to get the individual drivers and crossovers for their hi-fi speakers to build my own though.

I need to go hunting for some plans for some speaker builds that have a proven track record of sounding great.

"Open area" means "high losses", when "enclosed spaces" should stand for "zero air leaks but the ones indicated such bass reflex duct" !
Often it's referred to total Q of the speaker ( Qt) and final Q in box, Q being an abstract number resulting from (...!?! )
By putting a speaker in a box you change some parameters.
If you don't want, you don't need to do it. Just leave the box open on the back.
Allow some space in behind to let extinguish the sound from behind,' cos you don't want it to be reflected by a wall/boundary and mixed again to the direct sound ( with time smearing...)
Some speakers to find some ideas

Thanks for the info.
Very new to this but love quality audio and love building things and learning new skills.I can generally learn a lot quite quickly.
I've looked at a lot of sites with huge amounts of info.
Will start with a bookshelf speaker pair to finish the 5.1 setup that I have I think (b&w 3 series speakers and 6 series sub)
I've found a couple of suitable scan speak and seas driver designed but it's very hard without hearing anything before hand and having such little knowledge.

I always like to get great products once and keep them for a long time. Probably not the best idea to use expensive components for a first speaker build though I suppose.

We'll I'm considering these as my first build.

I need rest speakers doesn't home theater and they look like a good fit and on the easier end of the designs on this page.
I'm comfortable with soldering etc. But I don't know where to buy the correct components from for the crossovers.
Even on Jantzen-audio.com I can't find them in their list.

Can anyone help with this?
I'm from Australia and can get the drivers from speakerbits.com
They sell some components of a different brand than what is used in the design but surely I can use different brands if I can find out what the actual individual xkmpknents are?
