Hi
Not so long ago I read about DIY amplifiers and It sounded very interresting. I normally do woodworking projects and this would a completly new kind of project for me. After a bit of research, I decided to take a Dayton DTA-2 (with a TA2024 chip). My goal is not to build a High End audio system but still make things correctly, using good component. I want to stick with boards ready (or near ready) as the DTA-2 board was because I must say that my electronic skills are pretty much limited to "electronic soldering 101".
First, I wanted to make a pretty simple amplifier as many of you have already made: single input, stereo output, volume control. The more I thought of it, the more I wanted to add stuff to the system. Some of theses ideas come from what I read in DIY articles and others are just my ideal audio system for everyday use...
I want to share here my ideas of my ideal system and feel free to comment, add your opinions and thought about them.
1- If there is one function I wanted to add is the possibility to plug more than one input (TV, Cellphone, Radio, mayby turntable). I would add a selector button to choose between those inputs.
2- After listen to mp3 on ipod/cellphone, my second use of this kind of system is to lesten to radio. I really wanted to add a digital FM tuner with a small LCD display. I looked online but it seem to be really diffucult to find that kind of board. I just found this:
DIY Kit lCD display AM FM radio IF +455kHz, +70kHz, -10.7MHz quartz alarm clock | eBay
Is this something I can plan to add?
3- I also have a Oracle alexandria turntable that I would want to plug in that amplifier. What I read is that I would need a Preamp, so fine, looking for a preamp online. Knowing that I don't aim to make a high end audio but nore an everyday use audio system, can I just take one of those board and use it? Am I realistic by wanting to install a preamp to use a turntable?

4- I read in several DIY article that its best to replace the capacitors and others components of amplifiers boards. Is this somethnig I really need to do? This not seems to be that complicated but I really need to know why and How to do it. So if this not important, I'll skip it.
So that is for now. I can hear here some of you laughing hard but hey, i just want to be in the right track so if you think this is too much, just say it.
Thanks a lot for any help
Louis

For a turntable you need a RIAA preamp, ie a preamp that has a RIAA equalization filter, commonly called a phono preamp.
If your looking to build a poweramp as well, maybe you should look in the solid state forum, class d amplifiers are not suitable for beginners who are just getting started.
In the solid state forum there are plenty of diy and beginner friendly circuits. However for a real beginner, i'd suggest a LM3886/TDA7293 chipamp kit.

I am confuse...is a DTA-2 amp IS actually a poweramp who use a class D amp chip (Ta2024)? If so, I would want to add component such a preamp, fm tuner and more inputs. Is it the kind of preamp that I would need:
PAiA - RIAA Phono Preamp Kit
my second option is to ditch all that preamp things and just not use my phono with it.
thanks

The DTA-2 is a power amp. Depending on the speakers you use and the listening area size, it might work well. The RIAA phono pre-amp you linked should work OK as well. You'll need to find a stereo selector switch if you want multiple inputs. If you only wanted two inputs, a DPDT switch should work. Once you start getting into selector switches though, it might move beyond "electronic soldering 101." However, there is plenty of help on this and other forums. This is a great place to learn, and I think you picked a good starter project. I would start with just a single input. Once you get that built, then look into a selector switch or a phono pre-amp. Go one step at a time.
Couple of points to cover: What is your budget and what speakers do you use? Describe your listening area.
Once you're listening to your first build, you'll probably feel a pleasant sense of accomplishment. This is a pretty cool hobby and can be quite addictive.
Have fun,
Mike
