the Sony Tapecorders have very nice TamRadio (ie Tamura) SE output transformers, suitable for EL84, 6V6 etc. They also have a 600 ohm tape which would make excellent drive for a sub amp (or to make a real balsy pre-amp)

Dave brings up an excellent point: Each of the reel-to-reel recorders I'm selling contains a complete stereo SE EL84 tube amplifier with the lovely Tamura OPTs seen in Dave's link above. I think there's a microphone preamp in there, too.

Listen to it as-is, or repurpose it. It's a perfect donor for something like the RH84 (search RH84 on this forum for lots of discussion).

Shipping is the only problem with these big tape units (they must weigh about 50 lbs.). But I'd be willing to help you get around that expense by pulling out the PS tranny and OPTs for you.

How does $90 sound for a complete set of great vintage iron?

Such a contrary bunch, you Aussies, insisting on living so far from the rest of us...

Ah yes, but we're far from everywhere, which can sometimes be a good thing. When you get bored of going to Hawaii, then it's only a short hop further to get here (and we're so much cheaper and nicer😀).

I will have to consult with "the holder of the purse strings", as my old Sansui AU-X1 has just done a Chernobyl:bawling: - hopefully only a fuse, but as it only happened last night I have been unable to investigate. Don't hold it for me, I'll mail you if I get the 'go-ahead'.

Hi Bill,

I followed an old Radiotronics article and about the only things I changed were some of the capacitor values in the cathodes. Take a look at my site and drill into the 6aq5 amp and then circuits. There you will find the Radiotronics article, as well as, a few other circuits.

I use a small pair of Entergy speakers on stands and the sound in my office is quite good. Very detailed and crisp.

Best regards,
Danny
