Finalists Question?

I've heard a design modification with different tweeters for the Finalists might be done in the future. I was wondering if someone in the know, knows if this likely? If so, I for for one hope it might be soon. Everything I've read about the Finalists makes me want to start building a pair.

Thanks!

Sorry, but I don't know of any crossover mods on the table for the Finalists. Neither Curt or I have Finalists that we could substitute a different tweeter for crossover mods. My son in Long Beach has the original pair I built which makes him about 2,000 miles away.

Sorry! Might I suggest Anthology's instead? They are a similar price with better bass performance.

Jim, thank you for the information. Sorry to hear, I was excited to build a pair based on the many great reviews on your design. Unfortunately the Anthology's are a bit large for my available space (wife approved).

If I might ask, for a near rear wall placement (8" +/-) will the Statement Monitors compare to the quality of sound of the Finalists?

Thank you again for the information and help.

Steve

The Statements Monitors are an excellent sounding speaker but will fall short in a comparison to the Finalists in comparison to bass extension and and mid natural detail sound quality. IMHO, the NE149's are a more natural sounding driver than the W4's used in the Monitors. That said, depending on your tastes and usage, the Monitors might be more to your tastes than the Finalists.
Just a thought, the Anthology's are very, very similar physically to Finalists setting on stands.

Finalist Tweeter

Jim, I am looking to build a set of Finalists in the next few months. The Dayton RS28F tweeter appears to no longer be available. Is there a replacement out there with similar characteristics? What would you recommend using in its place?

That's a question Curt could answer better than I. Anything except an Usher 9950 would probably require some crossover changes. The RS28 and Usher 9950 are basically clones.

There is a new RS28 coming from the new manufacture that bought Usher but who knows how long it will take to make that happen.

Honestly, I'd suggest you take a hard look at the Anthology's. Similar price range with better dynamics.

Finalist Tweeter Status

Jim,, I appreciate the prompt response. I did indeed reach out to Curt and he had very good news. His response is below:

"According to an unnamed source at Parts Express, they will have the RS28F back in stock early next year. Whether this will transpire in that time frame, and whether this RS28F will be exactly the same as the old stock will of course remain to be seen.

To that end, I’m working with Meniscus to revise the Finalist network to utilize the Morel CAT308 or perhaps the CAT328 tweeter. In my opinion, these will be the best substitute for the RS28F. Unfortunately with the tweeter change, I will have to go through the voicing process on the Finalists again. Because of the time and effort involved, it will likely be around Christmas before I have this accomplished. "

I will look at the speaker you mentioned,,,just concerned that it might be too large.

Curt and I had a discussion about the Morel replacement but I wasn't sure how soon that might come about so I didn't mention it. He's crazy busy with work, life and his never ending passion for speaker design.

The Morel tweeters he mentioned are very nice sounding and extremely robust so they'll make a very good replacement.

Think of this comparison of the Finalists vs Anthology's. The Anthology's are equal in size to the Finalists on 24" stands which is the bass section on the Anthology's.

Sorry, no close wall placement options on any of our designs except the Finalist which are NLA and the Statements Monitors.

That option added complexity and wasn't very popular.

All of our designs can be placed as close as 12" to the rear wall without too much impact on the sound stage. This is true of all speakers, commercial and DIY if they have normal baffle step built in.

The Travelers are another option that you might want to take a look at. They are listed at Meniscus.

I am using finalist speaker around 4 years. This is good speaker if I consider sound stage and mid range, the low is also very good, but it lacks dynamics. Recently I bought Tannoy Cheviot and feeling that Finalist lacks energy and misses some high frequency. It is very non fatiguing speaker, but has compromised with dynamics and energy. I have tried with different amplifiers, currently using Parasound Halo A21, I also tried it with First watt M2, but there is no change.
