Well, ive been doing research on just about all the DIY speakers I can get my hands on within my budget(up to $800US) and have narrowed it down to a few choices. Would appreciate any input/help/reasoning on which to build. I have pretty decent woodworking skill, have built a fully functional voigt pipe with no problems(and other non-audio related stuff). electronics is another matter.... But I can sort of solder(cant read schematic but I know people around me who will can) My listening room is small: 12'x13' , musical tastes are just about everything, but focus on opera(vocals are key) and orchestral. I would really prefer to have a speaker which can present a large orchestra well.... even at the expense of some clarity/bass/whatever.
also listen to rock(zeppelin, beatles, chili peppers - old stuff and new)
jazz(miles davis, dave brubeck, etc.)
electronica((not much) - Bjork etc
and just about everything else exept rap
im not a bass freak - quite the opposite. would rather have nice tight bass at 45 hz than one note punches to the stomach at 30hz.
went through a long an arduous research process as stated above - also will be buying a new amp to go with the speakers, so efficience/etc is not a problem - I would rather have high efficiency though, im dying to build a 300b kit.
and the finalists are...(in order of most likely selection)
1. Proac 2.5 clone
2. Ellis audio 1801b
3. bottlehead straight 8(metal tweeter scares me)
4. selah audio R3CR(bit over budget...)
other suggestions welcome.
sooooooooooooo
anyone have any thoughts?(id love to hear about some high efficiency stuff exept backhorn - dont want to mess with cutting too many angles/internal stuff)
😛
thanks in advance
