in this case on the CD there are only 2 or 3 songs as you can do to make it stand out more?

That sounds like an older player that will only recognise and play Red Book standard discs.

When I saw you mention "wav" I thought you were meaning could it play other file types recorded onto a disc, such as MP3 for example.

No, your Philips would not be able to play such discs but there are other different players that can. Players that can do this tend to use DVD type mechanisms and pickups... such as some of the later Marantz models.
I do not own the CD 940 Philips.
I was thinking of buying it because it is cheap and then make the changes shown on this page:

That is quite a modification list but it only seems to be adding an SPDIF output. It won't play other file formats on CD (such as WMA or MP3). That is a totally different thing altogether.
The Philips is a nice player if you want to have a go at those mods... I don't know anyone that offers or has done that though.

It depends what you want it to do. The Philips is fine as a transport and also to modify and to add an external DAC and so on but you will not get it to play other file formats.
For that you need a player that has a pickup and servo system that is designed to read and run the disc at the required speeds. The Philips can never be made to do that. It will only ever play normal CD's. As a normal CD player its probably quite a good "project player" to modify and "improve" if that is what you want to do.
If you want to play other formats and be a able to pop a USB drive into it to play other files then I would look at buying something like a recent Marantz.
