Possibly, it depends if I think I can pull it off well. I don't have much of a problem with wood or MDF but this looks like another league altogether.
Thanks for all the links and suggestions so far. There's a lot to digest and I'm having trouble understanding most of it.
I can relate more easily to the method shown in the photo's. It looks do-able with planning and care. And doesn't need specialist equipment. The mold's would undoubtedly be the way to go if this was a larger scale production(multiple pairs) and unit to unit consistency was critical but I think something very small scale like this would be better served with more rudimentary methods.
Anyone up for translating the captions shown with the pictures on the last page?

I don't think I'd even consider doing it that plywood hoop-frame way: too labour intensive, not exact enough.
Like I said, 1 mold will do 4 half shells. I'd much rather spend the time to make a perfectly smooth buck that's only half of the finished size than try to fill, smooth and sand 2 complete speakers.
Up to you though. 🙂

I've been playing quite a while with fiberglass and polyester back in the days when I was into car-hifi. Unfortunately, no digital pictures from those projects. In my opinion, easiest way to get nice shapes is to use same kind of skeleton as in that spanish project. But instead of glassfiber mat I prefer thick stretchy fabric. It is easy to get over even a complicated skeleton and can be reinforced with glassfiber mat when it is dry.
I did little pods for my HT last summer. Not very complicated design but the construction is similar to those kickpanels etc I did to cars.
David Lee Roth was kind enough to give his 80's pants... 😀
After some putty and sanding...
...and paint.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Thanks Mark, you're a good 'un.
Would it be worth getting one side CNC'd to take a mould from and possibly the front baffles?
Lots of nice fibreglass stuff here http://www.cfsnet.co.uk/acatalog/
Look in the crafts section for moulding kit.

Good stuff. That looks like a one stop shop for this.
As for the CNC, its worth looking into but will likely end up very expensive. If that's the case then I don't think it would be worth it just for a single pair of speakers. I'm just guessing here so it might be feasible. Having someone else machine virtually the entire project for you kinda takes away some of the DIY though.

ok but why fiberglass why not just polyester?
No reason. I wasn't aware of the polyester until recently but it looks to be more workable, ie. easy sand, than fibreglass.
