Fiber bundle light guide- Flourescents?

Ok I've searched most of the threads and want to use flourescent lite source because of cost and low heat. Now I was thinking of getting some bulk glass fiber cable and sandwiching it between to pieces of glass to collect and direct the light through the LCD panel. Any ideas, I've found some manufacturers of such cable but have not found any retail outlets for it yet. But it should be fairly cheap.

I'm no expert on light transmission but a 1" thick light guide made the size of the led display should be adequate. Not sure about a fresnel after the light guide or before, but can experiment with that. was thinking of .5mm size or smaller glass fiber. So far I don't think anyone has tried this, it should give a very direct source of light through the panel then fresnel and optics.

Any thoughts on this...

Fishing line as wave guide?

ok been looking around for some stuff to use as a wave guide and fishing line seems pretty cheap, but not sure if it's light tranmission properties are good enough. It's pretty cheap and 100lb tess is 1mm in diameter. So for a 8.3x6.25" display you would need -

8.3x6.25"=51.56sq"=
6.1546sq cm in a sq"=317.33 sq cm
100 pieces of line per sq cm @ 1inch length , could go as small as 1/2 inch with this
so that is 100 inches * 317.33 sq cm =31733 inches total.

31733 inches / 36 inches/yd =881 yds of line or for half inch thickness = 440.5 yds. You can pick this up off the internet for around $25

You don't have to cut each one seperatly you can make a bunch of 1 foot long strands and cut them all at once to 1 inch. Might take a couple of days though.

I have a home made light detector, so can see what the tramission loss is.

Maybe I will go to bimart and get some to do some testing with a sq cm. 🙂

Won't work

I made some fiber strands and tested the output and it diffuses very quickly not what we want. Here is a diagram of what I have found on the internet, should have deduced this before 🙂 Anyway been learning about lenses and such. Been reading for 3 days strait now on this stuff. There is some fiber that transmit out the sides, but the intensity would degrade after a few inches. Maybe a sandwich of such cable with the light shining on it would act as a high efficiency polarizer. Please excuse my spelling and drawing ability 🙂 Also check out this link on illuminating a lcd panel. Need to find out where to get these.

hi jimbo

i've post a thread about fiber optics few weeks ago but no one answered
i'"ve worked with it but it was very small diameters (0.5mm) 10 years ago
it's possible to find fiber optics at a low price but i don't know if it gives enouthg light for us.
try it and tell us

bye
