FHXL sound quality expectations

Morning all,

I'm looking at building a set of Frugel-Horn XL with A11MS drivers but am a little torn. This will be my first build and I'm keen to get a good usable set of speakers at the end of it. I've listened to lots of fhxl "tests" on YouTube which sound good, but that isn't going to give the real sound of these speakers due to recording quality, compression, etc.

What kind of comparable level of speaker should I be expecting? Are we talking PMC transmission line standards or more towards the mission budget end of things?

It will sound different. Better? Depends on what you are looking for. I would prefer them (note: never heard any PMC, but from a tchnical POV i am notimpressesd by their lines)

FHXL does a rerally good job at extracting bottom out of the (appropriate) driver installed. Above the mass corner the sound is pretty much the same no matter what box you put it into — ignoring the affectsof the box and its diffraction signature. Means you can change (to a large extent) whatbthey sound like by swapping in a different driver.

A11ms is quite seemless, but has some HF ringing which you may find annoying. You will find at least a few threads where people have developed notch filters, i prefer tackling the issue at the source: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/...-tweak-and-other-metal-cone-markaudio.409632/

Because the room is used to enlarge the effective mouth size — the bass gain and how low it goes — the room has a larger than normal affectbon the bottom. And as does the damping. These degrees of freedom make the FHs very versatile, but final results depend on tuning and placement.

Have fun, i don’t think you will be disappointed.
