AoE deals with the possiblity to use a jfet as a resistor. As it is so simple, why not use it as a (programmable) load resistor? Or will the sound quality suffer?

Problems
1) calibration - the relationship between Vgs and Rds is very variable between samples and is temperature dependent
2) relatively noisy - Vgs noise becomes resistance variation
3) its another rf detector to pick up your gsm phone
The linearity is probably good enough at MC output levels
