Eva Cassidy
Nohra Jones
Jane Monheit
In that order. Eva is actually in her own class. I pity those that wait until all her CDs are sold before they catch on. 😀

I don't know Jane, but the first two are singers, not musicians...
Actualy come to think of it, the word singer does not have a female form like singstress or something, so its been a pretty even game so far.

OK. I haven't had enough coffee yet.
But, those that haven't heard of Eva Cassidy, should take note before it's too late.

Eva Cassidy "Live at Blues Alley" or "Eva by Heart"
Norah Jones "Come away with Me"
Jane Monheit "Taking a chance on Love"
All are excellent examples of outstanding performances and recording engineering.

Female musicians? That's an easy one:
Clara Haskil
Jacqueline du Pré
Ginette Neveu
If we allow singers too, then the list would be long. 🙂

Has everybody forgotten about Wendy? At least I like to see her as more than just a voice for hire. I limit this to the Plasmatic years. Her solo career was a travesty. Not only has she worked with the legend--Lemmy (duh)--she's the only female I know that knows how to operate a chainsaw. This former stripper and porn actress was a true renaissance woman.

Eve Libertine might be just a voice. But she's anything but a tool. I think of her as an artist/musician. The clip consists of two songs, with Eve singing on the second one, starting at 4.43. I think it's amazing that her voice holds up, which can only be credited to her voice schooling. It sounds like her voice comes close to breaking on the live version of Shaved Women on the Crass: Stations of the Crass album. It's almost scary hearing her sing.

I never were an X-Ray Spex fan, hence I know very little about Poly Styrene. But this is great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrRRdkQaaRU
