Scottmoose will have some ideas re the newest Mark Audio drivers ( i.e. Alpair12) - the enclosures may be rather different than the half Chili. Judging by what I've heard of the smaller drivers and others have reported on the A10 and A12s - these should probably be on any DIYers short list of "affordable" drivers.
And of course lots of folks ( I think including Bob Brines?) are quite enamored of newer large TangBands, or for that matter Audio Nirvana.

chers for the response but iwould like to use either fostex or jordans as these are more readily avalable in the UK also eard both these before and liked what they were doing, also cabnet hight is an issue as i have a real living room so still need help, cheers phil

Hmmm...
There's a lot of small bookshelf designs for Fostex drivers, but you need the drivers suited for vented use (FE127 if you can get hold of them, there's a couple of others too).

thanks again,
I can have a hight of up to 36" as said i liked the sound of FE167e but cant get them unless anyone knows where has some in the uK, so i was thinking FE166 instead but dont know about cabnet adjustments,
please help

Phil:
If Jordans are on your candidate list, then overlooking the newest Mark Audio designs, even if there is no direct UK distributor/reseller, could considered shortsighted.
I've heard multiple samples of both within the past couple of years, as well as being quite familiar with the late FExx7 and FFxxxK series, so the suggestion is not made on idle conjecture or 'cause "I read it on the internet" 😱
of course I also understand the leap of faith required in the absence of an opportunity to hear something new with your own ears.
The requirement by any of the FExxx6E (now "n") drivers for a larger enclosure types than those in which the 7's would work could certainly be an issue in terms of domestic acceptance factors. Some solutions to this issue include separate woofers/bi-amping, but I'd suspect this might not be practical in your case?
There is no shortage of enclosure designs proven to work well for any of the drivers listed, better recommendations for either could be made if you were to clarifying your physical space constraints and anticipated amplifier power.
Phil:
ps to above post - (too late to edit🙂)
above was typed while multi-tasking, so excuse the possibly pizzy tone - not intended
cheers

FExx6En drivers really want to be in a horn...
I have FE167eN available if you want the best Chilis possible... you might also be able to talk Colin (Toppsy) in north England out of his (idle speculation on my part -- he has the addiction and is on to different things)
The Mark Audio are excellent, just not in the same efficiency league as the Fostex. Some of the gen 1 metal drivers are broadly similar to the Jordan, the gen2 are better IMHO.They are available from blue planet in Germany.

hi thanks for the advice/replies as for my room its 6m x 4m as i said i only really want the speaker to be about 1m tall, for power/ampifacation i use an Exposure 3010, 100 watts pc, the main music i listen to is jazz, folk & female vocals (emmylou harris, sandy denny, diana krall & naterlie merchant) to name a few, hope this helps

That should certainly be plenty of power for lower sensitivity ( on paper ) drivers such as the Jordans or Mark Audio. Indeed, while I'm not familiar with or want to disparage the Exposure amp, at lower listening levels, the currently available higher sensitivity Fostex drivers (i.e. FE166En, FE206En) might well expose some heretofore undiscovered warts in the amp's sonics.
There are some relatively simple designs for the J or MA drivers that would easily fit your size criteria: the well proven 36" MLTL, Scott's Pensil 10 or 12 for singles, and the "microtower" for dual 4" (e.g. CHR & EL70) Note that the MA are 4ohms, so unless an amp's stability and sonics are known to be safe and listenable at 2ohms, duals should probably configured in series)

Sorry to disappoint but the 2-pr of EnABLed FE167eN drivers I have are not for sale. One set is installed in my Fonken floorstanders and the others are with my Son in a pair of Scottmoose MLTLs. Though I must admit I have been distracted of late with the very aimiable Tang Band W8-1772 drivers in some BR boxes based on the Bob Brines FB-20 design but modifed for the TB drivers, and a modified version of the TT-2000, I still enjoy the Fonkens floorstanders (photo attached) and was in fact listening to them yesterday albiet with some assist form Fostex T90A supertweeters to help out at the top end. I must admit, not having listened to these for quite a few months, I really enjoyed them even though the bass is not quite as low as the TB's but very clean and punchy never-the-less. They are still wired up now and I shall be listening to them later today after I have taken the wife shopping.🙁
Not to steal the thread but Dave (Planet10) would the MA Alpair10 be a suitable candidate for the Fonken167 floorstanders if suitable modified? I ask this as I don't have the software (or knowledge) to redisn the cabs for the A10's. Also from what I can gather the A10's may require a smaller cabinet in a Fonken style cabinet than the FE167e, yes?

I just finished a pair of half chili's with Dave's FE167eN's and they are breathtaking. You better not waste any time and get a pair before Dave runs out. Be sure to use spikes on your chili's......you will get all the low end the design and driver have to offer. I am running mine with an 8 watts per channel tube amp and they leave power to spare.
Thanx for the clarification Colin, Good to hear you are enjoying the CHilis Jon.
The current Alpair 10 fits into a miniOnken of half the volume of the Fonken167. Like the F167 one would need to add a false base/stand to the bottom. The extra volume would give more versatility to add optional woofer(s).
One could of course do a squared version with 2xAlpair10 with a top firing unit. A front firing unit could well work too.
From the data Mark posted, the Rev2 A10s will drop in, the round coil being very close, the rectangular one loosing a bit of bass level, so a bit of retune is probably warranted... we'll see where actual production falls, i don't think Mark has finished refining the details. Give me an opportunity to improve the aesthetics from what has been done for the Mar-Kel, CHR-Ken and dMar-Ken.
The Alpair12 (nominal 6.5") seems to want the same miniOnken volume as the A10 (nominal 5.25"), so it is taking a bit of creativily to make a box that doesn't look like a chopped off cube.
