I would like to build a pair with Fostex full range speakers, but, all along the threads it appears that it is impossible to get a real and full advice about one project.
Most of the time the same links are given and a large part of posts do not help speaking about quarter wave that it is not the subject about and no good enclosure mesurent are given with.😕
The 126E and 127E seems to be a pretty good solution, so if someone has built it, I would be very happy to talk with him as he use the Fostex regular or another enclosure.
Best regards.🙂

This person goes into a lot of detail with photos during his attempt at building the FE127E DBR enclosure. And it's in French 🙂

I have just finished building a pair of these. I am not an experienced speaker builder and have started another thread with questions about tweaking my enclosure. You might find this useful if anyone replies with suggestion:

I got it !
This is the only I can found which is really documented.
For the 126E I found many foto gallery but nothing about the sound.
Look for the 166 or 167 : this is the same, many topiks, but try to find enclosure parameters and listening review and you will be surprised : nothing.
I buit many pair of loudspeakers in my life from Fostex 103 to such big as 2 x 38 cm for bass, 17 cm medium and FT90 tweeter.
Nevertheless, because of the QTS of most Fostex speakers it seems to be logical to choose the enclosure box with the help of persons who built it.
Thanks for your reply.

I have not built a DB using the fostex 127 driver however I have built this design using a 4 inch redback driver that is very similar to the FE 103, it may actually be from the same factory.
Bottom line is I built these as an experiment and have carried out all sorts of mods to tame the midrange etc, the end result is quite stunning sonically and has exceeded all my expectations, I imagine the proper fostex driver implementation would be better still.
Have a look at these posts on to get some insight in the processes I went through and the mods, I am sure many will apply to the 126/7 drivers as well.
Just two things, my implementation is run in conjunction with a bass extender module that is available as a kit from altronics in Australia and the boxes also have a top rear facing port in the top outside corner, with a reflector to send some bass into the corner. I know it sounds like it wouldn't work but it does, these speaker utterly cream my B and W 602 s3s and the 2 other pairs speakers I have that sound better than the 602s. Amazing from 4 inch drivers!
They actually produce useful output now down to about 40Hz, no I am not kidding, however I think a supplementary sub that cuts in a 55hz or so would complement things nicely, which is something I'm working on.

I hope this is helpful, the one thing I have found is that smaller drivers such as these are very tuneable and it is really worth putting in the time to tinker.
All the best
Brad.

Thanks for theese answers !
At this time I use my daugther loudspeakers which are FE103 BR.
That the reason why I look for just more bass... 😉
So I would like to try 126/127 if someone has a good listening experience from a DiY realisation.
It will be for a 12 m² listening room and not high level.

There are a few threads on this forum about Fostex BLH. This is the latest: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=78581. Also, check out http://fullrangedriver.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=328 for listening impressions of FE126 BLH. I am currently finishing a set of these and will post my impressions when done. Until then, use the "search" function of the message boards 😉 .
Nice to post your impressions...
but I would like to avoid loudspeakers which horn is on the back because of the relation with the wall.
Now I look for double BR for 127, Fonken.
I expect your result will be fine to be added on my list.

I`ve built the double BR`s for the FE127E`s and am very happy with the sound. I made the box about 12" taller and filled the bottom chamber with sand , to act as a stand and improve stability. Lowest octave missing and on most music they`re much clearer sounding than the Infinities I replaced with. There`s my opinion, FWIW.

Great review !
Do you use the enclosure suggested by Fostex for the FE126E backhorn ?

If you dug around my side you'd find this link: -

Which shows the build of the recommended Fostex design. Which is the basis of the review.

OK, 126E with back horn + Breflex does not seem to be able to be a good solution because of the lack of bass...
So I just have to get more information about FE127E or turn my eyes to 166/167... 🙂

OW – if you want true bass – size matters. The little FE126e’s just can’t shift that volume/feq of air but what they lack, they lack very gracefully. I built the recommended cabs for the FE166ES-R’s last year
http://www.greenie512.net/greenie512/html/fostex_166er-r.html
and I thought they were great but have not heard the standard drivers. I sold them due to space problems (too many boxes) and thoroughly regret it. These would obviously go lower than the smaller driver but couldn’t go near my Peerless10” XLS woofer.

Hi Greenie,
how do you think a pair of 126e's would go in a medium sized room with a nice subwoofer (I've just about finished a Decware Wicked One - if this isn't good enough I'll think about :
http://member.newsguy.com/~stigerik/almighty/index.html )
If no good, what size Fostex driver do you think? I've no experience with them.
cheers
Gary

G’day Gary
If you’ve read the above review off my site you’ll realize the boys played the FE126e’s quite load and in my living room (8 x 8 m) they sounded amazingly good driven off a small valve amp. I tend to play things a bit lower and at these levels the small drivers can not fill the volume so sound a bit thin in this room. In my smaller home office room they sound great at lower volumes.
How big is your living room?
I certainly wouldn’t match the FE126e’s with a very large subwoofer as it might “overpower” their presentation.
I’ve just build a compact sub which would match them great.
http://www.greenie512.net/greenie512/html/the_cerberus.html
I feel a bit guilty using the 126’s as shed speakers and quite often they stop me working and I sit on the bench and drift away …………….
The FE166 ES-R’s certainly filled the room with a good sound stage.

Hi again Greenie,
my room is about 8m x 5m x 2.7 ceilings, so fairly large, however my listening position is about 3 meters from the speakers which are positioned along the long wall..
At this point I'm trying to decide which drivers/enclosure to build for my first single driver set of speakers. Hopefully my decware wicked one horn loaded subwoofer will be ok, so that just leaves the main speakers to be chosen/built. Looked at lots from Jericho/frugal horns to Big Fun Boxes!!! 4.5 inch to 8 inch drivers. I'm severely limited on budget so I have to get it pretty right first time. Any suggestions would be welcomed! I'm in Melbourne so I guess I'll have to mail order most of my stuff from the US.
cheers

Since this is a first project and price is an issue would you be intersted in buiding a set of speakers for say $100.00 or less plus another $14.00 or so for a bass boost module kit. I have spent several weeks refining a set-up based on this driver from altronics:
http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=prod&grp=1&list=0&pg=1&sort=code
C-0635 in a double bass box.
I know it sounds low brow and unlikely to work, but I swear over a dozen people have heard these and all reckon that they sound fantastic, in fact four of the 12 want me to build them a set for money so something must be right!
I'm sure there are better speakers out there but we are talking really cheap, seriously these sound way way better than my $1100 B and W 602-S3s
I have pix of the experimental set including details if your intersted and you can have a look at the posts I put on the fullrange driver forum that I posted before.
The bass module which is this kit
http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=item&id=K5561
makes it really work properly, and combined with your sub I think these speakers would rock!
The only reservation I would have is that your room size is fairly large but they go pretty loud on the smell of an oily watt so they might be enough. At 3m listening though it should be perfect.
Bottom line at this price its a good experiment and you could always use them with your computer later if you move to something else and all the parts are in OZ!
