Almost unlimited possibilities. A great learning tool and awesome sounding amps.

This is my favorite too. And I am the first who give rating to this thread 😎
I'm following this thread (link below). There's very good info on whether or not replace "old" (but still good) transistors on vintage Japanese amplifiers...
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/solid-state/269466-to92-transistor-replacement.html
Many start all this by replacing the electrolytics first and, at a certain point, someone comes saying: "don't forget to replace that "x" transistor as well!!".
A few times I followed the advise, then painfully regret it. The stock transistor in that 1977-78 amplifier was working very well actually.
I like these threads because a lot of myths simply are smashed!
P.S.: Of course, if the tranny is noisy and making problems, we replace it...

I'm having a blast with this one:
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/solid-state/275171-improve-rotel-amp-thd-20db-15.html
And not just because I happen to have a Rotel RA-820AX gathering dust that won't know what hit it right after I finish other projects: it's a masterclass in modding and a wonderful learning tool, the perfect "now let's get our hands dirty" companion to Self's amp book. Miss it at your peril.
Cheers,
Cabirio

very old thread but lot of informative discussions on amplifier design.

I had the chance to play a friend's solid state guitar multi amp a while back, and was fairly impressed at its ability to mimic various tube amps and configurations.
Has anyone seen an implementation for this in playback stereo amps? And no, I don't mean a tube buffer, which I've tried without them turning solid state amps' sound into tube sound.
My thinking is, with modern DSP, it may not be that difficult to profile a given tube's distortion profile, and impose it on a solid state amp's output.
Links or thoughts on implementing this?

Sure, if the solid state amp is good enough, DSP will make it sound a lot like a tube amplifier.
