I am building a doug self amplifier using 2SC3281 & 2SA1302 and whe i did a google search to find a suplier i found a few articles say there were low priced fakes around. I found 2 sources of very cheep versions of these transistors as follows:
GoCompononets Mospec 2SA1302 Price £1.68 each
GoCompononets Mospec 2SC3281 Price £1.46 each
Elclondon Toshiba 2SA1302 Price £3.00 each
Elclondon Toshiba 2SC3281 Price £2.98 each
In the first case these Mospec are very cheap, other suppliers put these at over £5.0 2SA1302 — UNBRANDED from cpc.farnell.com .
I found a links sound.westhost.com/fake/counterfeit-p2.htm about fakes and dont know which supllier to trust. Bought a sample from elclondon and the transistors seem ok to look at. Havent tested them.
Has anyone had any experience particularly from GoCompononets.
The Mospec transistor seem too cheap to be true.
Advice anyone

The Toshibas are obsolete. If they are very old stock they may be genuine, but I believe a major reason for the emergence of the almost identical 1943/5200 was to avoid further confusion with the counterfeiters.
Unfortunately they started fake 1943/5200 lines as well.
Investigate the mospecs, they may be genuine copies but I have no idea of the quality.
Or try to find ONsemi equivalents, MJL1302/3281 or the newer MJL4302/4281

Farnell sells ON Semi equivalents:
MJL1302G - Farnell # 9557040
MJL3281G - Farnell # 1172585
Price in quantities 1 to 25 - £2-54 +VAT

cpc.farnell sell two versions that appear on the surface to be identical but one is much cheaper than the other.
MJL1302AG = £2.5
MJL1302A = £4.0
Dont know what diference the G at the end makes apart from the price.
Cant find the MJL1302AG on the onsemi site just the MJL1302A version.
Are these exact replacements for 2SA1302/2SC3281.
What are the 1943/5200.
found MJL4302/MJL4281A on the gocomponents AT £7.12ea thats a no go, too expensive.
Thanks

The G probably denotes leadfree (green) version.
The OnSemi parts are clones, much like the MOSPEC ones.
www.profusionplc.com sell the real Toshiba 2SC5200/2SA1943 which would be a better replacement for the obsolete devices listed in the project.
edit: actually you would be better asking Profusion if they are Toshiba, they used to be but now they are listed as "other" yet the gain grading is still the top end one.

http://uk.digikey.com/ has the Toshiba 2SC5200/2SA1943. They also have the Fairchild version FJL4215/FJL4315. Looks like shipping is €18 to UK.
I bought audio transistors from digikey last month, they even had free shipping on orders over €65 to Sweden. 🙂

Order the Fairchild equivalents of the 2SA1943/2SC5200 - apparently these are excellent. Otherwise, use the Onsemi MJL3281/1302 or 4281/4302.
The MOSPEC clones may be of good quality. I would get a pair and crack open them to see what is inside.

Actually, the ONsemi parts are a ground up design, and a decade newer. The gain is much flatter vs collector current for the ONsemi parts, so they actually will work much better. Better still, you can get free samples.
I think there is a cross refer page for Fairchild products to the same product from other manufacturer. Anyone knows its web-link? Tks.

I wonder too what's the difference.
I guess the AG is the rohs version which replaced the normal one.
They also have the Fairchild version FJL4215/FJL4315.
The Fairchild are quite different...
Even if they are the same, (ON and Fairchild), I don't think anyone will (or can) buy the Fairchild alternative. I have a vendor who sell the ONs by MOQ-25pcs / tube but the Fairchild MOQ is 720pcs / bag which is no good for any purchaser even if the unit price is less than 30% of the ONs. So Fairchild is out of our game (I mean low quantity buyers).
Anyone find any place for buying MOSPECs (but they only have TO-3 MJ15003/4) ? This is from Taiwan and I have used them for a couple of occassions. Problem with buying TO-3 MJ15003/4s from my vendor is they sold them in trays of 100.

Digikey sells low quantity at good price (<2$ each).
got my shelf ...50pcs of mospec 2sc3281 ... intention is to make brother of quasi with them .... will see how it goes and will post my findings here

The 2SA1943/2SC5200 are equivalent to the 2SA1302/2SC3281? Thanks for putting me in the picture! I wasn't aware of that. A light went on and it's blinding me.
I don't think they are equivalent.
Toshiba released a newer version to replace the 3281. The spec of the 5200 is different from the 3281.
ONsemi released an equivalent to the 3281 and have since issued a variety of devices of similar design, most of which are different in specification.
I think if you compare 5200 to all of the 3281 and similar from ONsemi, you may find that none match.
