Facebook Users

I created a specific group for amplifier repairmen and those who are seriously learning on Facebook. I'm going to try and get it filled with knowledgeable people and make it a place where someone can ask questions without being made to feel like an idiot for trying.

That being said, anyone who comes in with a blown amp and just says "what's wrong" won't be staying long.

Also hoping to create a directory of repairmen so if you have someone who doesn't want to ship, they can be directed to someone in their area.

I feel like these two statements contradict each other.

As an example, if I buy an untested car amp and something is wrong with it, what I would do is open it up, look for something burned, take a picture and post it in the group asking what could cause this or where to start. If theres nothing burned, I will probably ask whats wrong with it. Everyone has to start somewhere.

In another audio group, I posted about a vintage hifi stereo that I recently got. All it does is hum when you turn it on. Not knowing anything about where to start or what to look for, I them about my skill level and knowledge and asked about it in the group. Some people gave a vague answer like check the psu, but never gave what to look for. I also got a bunch of flak about not know the basics and I shouldn't be working on it. I want to learn, but I need to know where to start and what to look for. I know the hum is probably power supply related, but I have no idea what voltages things should be and what the signals should and shouldnt look like.

I get theres a difference between someone wanting to learn and someone wanting just an answer. I don't think you should kick everyone that asks "whats wrong", but maybe instead add a questionnaire for when they join before approving them to filter out the people you want vs the ones you dont (and the annoying fake bots).

Just my $.02

I don't really know how to respond. It's almost impossible to describe the type of people that I would remove from the group. It is one of those things that to me is obvious, when somebody hasn't tried and doesn't have a basic knowledge. Either way, I had another Facebook group that bought and sold amplifiers that worked and did not work, when I asked to buy some blown ones I had people left and right asking me to repair theirs. Other people talked about wanting a group specifically towards repairing them. I have recommended Perry's tutorial, this website, and also Barevids on YouTube. The reality of it is, there is millions of people on Facebook, and they check it religiously throughout the day. I thought I would post it here so some of the experts here could help there as well, if they are already on Facebook. I'm not trying to drive people away from here, but I am a firm believer in having multiple options. I have a lot of hobbies, some of them might have four or five different websites that I use for great advice. Sometimes groups from one do not play well with groups from another. Either way, the whole idea of this threat was just to let people know another option if they are Facebook addicts, and that's what I've done.

You can search on Facebook groups actually, however I would love to see forums such as this have a resurgence. Facebook makes it too easy for 1 subject to loose all control, by about comment 2.... This layout does make it much easier to store and search for data, as well as keep track of helping someone however it also is easy to miss.

This forum, in particularly this section is always really active and not to mention the mad scientist is the reason why. Here there are some very gifted techs however Perry, you are brilliant beyond imagination, if I could only learn all that you have forgotten I could call myself a master repairman no doubt. I said it over and over earlier this year when we had spoken via email but it can never be said or echo enough, Thank you!
