i realize it's no apples to apples but between the two design which one has more 'speed'? and which one has more easygoing romantic (tube-like?) sound?
i'm guessing f4 for the former and aleph for the latter...

F4 is absolutely impossible to evaluate without appropriate preamp and then it really embrace character of preamp itself
in other words - F4 is almost completely neutral
Aleph J is slightly euphonic mean machine ; in a good way
I could live with it as my final amp ....... but building new ones is so big fun that I never had time to make it proper - as boxed one

another blindfolded question but if i was aiming for ultimate transparency, can f4+appropriate preamp do better than aleph? i'm assuming that aleph is more of a purist solution where as f4+pre is for coloring the sound to your liking.
I repeat - F4 is completely dependent of preamp
if pre is colored , combo will be , too
if pre is clean and neutral , combo will be , too
so - enough with generalization ........ 😉

Agree with ZM, depends on your Pre. Although I have just built an Aleph J last week and having built F4 & F5 the J is more musical to my ears. Excellent amp.
Normal, the last built is always the best one.Agree with ZM, depends on your Pre. Although I have just built an Aleph J last week and having built F4 & F5 the J is more musical to my ears. Excellent amp.
all the tooling with the enclosure damages your hearing temporarily so that the speakers sound less resolute when complete? heh

I have yet to hear an amp that sounds as veluptuous as the AJ. It has smooth, big, rounded midrange and sweet highs. Very romantic amp. Should have stopped with it. All other Pass amps i have heard are cleaner and sharper. An F4 has no identity in theory, as ZM stated. Find you a qaida pre or feed it from AJ outputs in a bi-amp configuration.
