I did a bit more testing of the bodgied up heatsinks, and they're not really working all that well. I checked on another stray piece of extrusion, and I've realised that there's no way I got through the coating before I put them all together. What the coating is, I have no idea, but eliminating it would no doubt improve the workings of the heatsink.
So I conceded defeat and put an order in for a set of the beefiest Conrad sinks. The end result is better (although less fun!) and I can get on with it.
You can hever have too many heatsinks around though!
