I was considering 1mm solid core for both power and signal. You may or may not know that we use it here in the UK for mains wiring. It is stiff and could be fashioned to look very neat. Any comments?

The problem with solid core is it snaps easily. If you have to undo cos it didnt work first time wires will start to break, and way easier than you think. I did it once but never again.
I have found this, which I had forgotten I had bought. It is Profigold Silver coated OFC speaker cable 1.5mm.. I will probably use this.
