Extremely cheap headphones amplifier

I've been thinkig about this:
V2 Portable OpAmp Stereo CMOY Headphone Amp Amplifier - eBay (item 230503795092 end time Aug-24-10 22:12:15 PDT)

But i wonder, how long will 2 9v batteries last? I would be using it maybe 3-10 hours each day. I don't want to change batteries every week. In that case i'd rather go with something else.
And it feels like the small size is a compromise. It feels like the Cmoy is designed to be small but it is possible to get better sound at the same price but at a bigger size. Is that true?

Edit: I've also read some about something called "crossfeed". Is that good or bad?

Try the Cmoy. It is a good beginner project, and will probably serve you well. You can work on building a power supply to run it from wall power later, if you need it.

Crossfeed basically means blending the left and right channels together. This is usually variable, to create a more comfortable listening experience on music which has pretty hard left/right seperation.

I suggest building the "typical application" schematic in the LME49600 data sheet. It's a very nice headphones amp. Not the absolute cheapest, but IMO the best performance for the buck.

My personal favorite at the moment.

I wouldn't suggest the LME49600 for a first build, it may appear simple but it's a high frequency device and special precautions must be taken to avoid oscillation (your PCB had ground planes it seems) and it is also surface mount, not the smallest but still probably awkward for a first time.

The CMOY amplifier should make a nice first build 🙂

Seems like it will be Cmoy then... I'll try to find all parts needed and see if i can get them all from Elfa. What other sellers do you recommend? In sweden/europe.

Well. I can't find those components since i have no idea of what i am looking for :S

It depends wha the problem is. if it is distortion at high volume, then this is a symptom of the sound card running out of drive current for your headphones. A headphone amp will fix that. If it sounds noisy and hissy and distorted even at low volume, then a headphone amp won't fix that.

The kit you linked to on eBay seems pretty good value, and you have the benefit of having all the parts, a PCB to build it on, and a construction guide.

Well. Since the soundcard i got isn't of such a very good quality isn't it "**** in-**** out". Will it really sound better with this amp? I don't need to play louder than i can atm.
Or is it like for speakers. A bad amp makes it sound bad and a better can make it sound a little better. Don't know how to explain really.

I suggest building the CMOY, It's a easy enough project and i guarantee that you will enjoy the sound.

If your onboard soundcard is a AD2000B, I don't think it's necessary to upgrade. Without getting a external set up.

On the particular note on sourcing parts, I Think you'll be stuck with buying parts from Mouser or Digikey. If your lucky you'll find a local electronics shop that will have the parts you need. I suggest getting that ebay kit, despite whatever the shipping cost.

Peace,
Kurtis

DIY Grado RA 1 Kit. Grym hörlursförstärkare | Uppsala | Blocket

That's interesting. A good looking cabinet aswell.
For those of you who can't read swedish i'll translate it for you 😀

What's included:
Wooden cabinet
Aluminum volume knob
Neutriks 1/4" headphone output
Input for power
Screws
A plate with goldplated RCA-conctacts
JRC 4556 opamp

All i need is something to power it and electronic components.

And it seems to be around $15 for it.

Here a page that has schematic of Grado RA-1 Headphone Amplifier Kit
and compares it to Cmoy HPA, which also is one Op-Amp driven by battery.
DIY Audio Projects - Hi-Fi Blog for Audiophiles: Grado RA1 Headphone Amplifier

Here is the Grado schematic, according to above page.
It is a standard op-amp circuit, with some less optimal resistor values.
In my opinion.
I would go for JFET OP, like OPA2134, and so lower resistor values.

I'm sorry for off-topic now, but there is a chance how my friend see my message.

Hello, my dear older brother Lineup!

I am glad that I be your friend, since I respect you and I think of you with affection.
This is the reason that I have to say, you're wrong:
You have no enemies.
Maybe some people do not understand you.
But I think you have no enemies.
If it would be so after all:
Not your enemies, but deal with your friends.

Your Wacky old friend:
