Extra Phillps CDM150/T6/942 Bulbs

I have some extra Phillps CDM150/T6/942 bulbs if anyone would like any at a real bargain. The specs on the bulbs can be seen here

There are several places that sell these bulbs to give you an idea of the typical cost:
Bulbman
Atlanta Lightbulbs

There is someone on eBay selling them for $54.95 + $8.95 shipping
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3728575670&category=14984

Standard magnetic ballasts that can operate this bulb are available here:
http://www.goodmart.com/products/243293.htm
http://www.elights.com/methalbal150.html
http://www.prolighting.com/15mehabakitq1.html

There is someone on eBay with F-Can ballasts that are all enclosed and nice and quiet. He typically lists them with a $35 buy it now. The next cheapest I could find these ballasts is $71 and the three local electrical supply stores I tried each wanted over $100 for one:

There is a group buy underway for a cold ellipsoidal reflector that will fit this bulb. There is a link in that thread to Ace’s post where he’s using a similar setup and finds the output to be equal or better than a 250W HQI setup with a reflector and condenser. The other nice advantage is that the light put forward will effectively be cold, So no real need for IR filtering. The bulb is also listed as UV Blocking as noted on the bulb in the picture. You can see an example of the type of reflector (or even buy one) from the group buy here at Edmunds Optical (it is the 97mm).

The price for the bulbs is $12 + shipping. In the US $5 should cover it ($3.85 Priority USPS and $1.30 insurance). That is less than ¼ the price of these bulbs normally. Other shipping is no problem at actual cost (no problem shipping outside US, but again you pay actual shipping costs). Get 3 bulbs for $41 shipped in the US - that's less than the cost of one bulb anywhere else! When the bulbs I have are gone I won't have any more. If anyone has some good DIY projector parts you'd like to trade, just let me know.

PS - Just to note - I am PayPal verified.

Hey Ace, No problem - however please don't take me wrong when I say I completely disagree. I know you use the GE lamp, and I'm not sure if that arc tube appears different (and indeed should be different as you've noted their longer expected lifespans), but these bulbs appear identical to those pictured at both the Phillips and the bulbman site I linked to in the first post. I see no difference in these or the bulbs pictured at the Bulbman site , in fact if you look closely at the picture at the Phillips site , I'd say the arc on the Phillips site itself looks even more tinted. I combined a close up of a bulb I have with the pic from the Phillips site. It is below for illustration.

Just need socket?

Well first off I should apologize to TaskMaster for my reaction to his attempt at help. I have recently noticed several questions asked on various threads that had already been clearly answered and the people asking them seemed to be mentally competant.

Taskmaster, I misunderstood your reminder to check the obvious and reacted very poorly. Please accept my apology.

As to the subject at hand, it seems that all that would be needed in addition to the bulbs offered and the F-can ballast kits for about $35 would be a socket. Is this correct?

After testing my small lcd with the old slide projector light source it seems that it will not need a very powerfull light source. It displayed clear and bright with the lights on and the shade up. This was only about a 36" diagonal projection, but my apartment has only an area with about 84" max to project on. I'm thinking that even as little as a 20% increase would be good enough in less light.
Opinions?

thanks

Hi Justme,

No sweat - I felt bad that you thought I was hassling you some way in the thread (and I honestly just thought that guy added the info after you looked), so it's all good 🙂.

Yes, a socket would be all else that's needed, unless you also wanted to setup some type of reflector. Getting up to an 84" projection with a 150 watt bulb may not be bright enough, but Ace or I Eat Flowers could probably answer better as they've got similar bulbs in use. I am planning on somewhere around a 60" projection and based on the shots I've seen it should be plenty bright.

BTW - 4 bulbs left for anyone interested.

In an Ellipsidal no probs, at 100inches dag i get an image way brighter then a 250w HQI.

I got the same bulb as you right here, its a buddies, not mine. By all means im not saying that your bulbs are used, for all i know it could be the angle of the cam taking the pic. I did mention this this because normally they are white when brand new, and i was only looking out for you just incase you got ripped.

The best way to tell if the bulbs are brand new or not, is if you see a long metal strip floating around in the arc tube they are new, if not they are used.

Trev🙂

Heya Task, i dont have a pic of the bulb with the metal in it, its not so easy to see through the ceramic with a cam. The metal strip is like a rounded peice of wire, its about 6-8mm long and you can move it around. Its only in the arc tube.

After the first fire up of the bulb the metal is gone, it gets vaporised into the halide gasses. Not all bulbs have a metal strip, some have metal balls such as the 250w HQI, but this particular bulb has the metal strip. If you dont have the strip or any metal balls, the bulb has been used. This is only for Metal Halide bulbs btw.

Trev🙂

Hmm - I swear I can see tiny spheres inside the arc tube. I tried to take a couple pics, but with the flash it was impossible. I took this pic through a microscope eye piece with my digital camera, so please forgive the quality.

Me2 - hey, wait... was that one of my Vacation pictures to Roswell 😉? I don't know about rattle since I didn't shake any, but they can certainly move. It wasn't easy getting a pic - I kept trying to illuminate the bulb with a LED flashlight, but the arc kept appearing too bright, so that was the best shot I could get with anything in it.

Megaman - I still plan to check shipping costs from the PO for you as I may have a bulb, but those who inquired on the first day have all ended up sending PayPal for two bulbs so I wanted to let anyone reading know they are all spoken for. I will send you an e-mail later today and let you know the situation.

Thanks
