Hey guys...so happy I found this site. I wanted to start another tread for this topic because the links others gave for the solution to this problem are not working on the other thread I found. Hopefully someone can help me out. I just found out (after taking apart the lcd) that the LCD ribbon cable will need to be extended so that the board (panel) does not lay ontop of the screen and block the image. I have no idea of what to do. Ideally, what I would like to do is buy a longer ribbon cable and replace the shorter one. Guys, please help in sending me some links on where I can buy these ribbon cables. Also, is there a certain type of ribbon cable I need to get? Does it matter which ribbon cable to get based on the size of the LCD or does the ribbon cables work with all the sizes? I have a IBM T56A 15'. Thanks in advance!
is it really a ribbon cable?
What usually needs to be extended is one or two Flat Flexible Cables (FFCs) that run between the vertical and horizontal driver boards. You have to extend them so you can (very gently) flop those driver boards out of the light path.
If that is the case, then you need to search for threads on "FFC extender". There are several, and all the info you need is here with photos, cheap sources, etc.
If you are one of the very lucky DIY builders with only one driver board, then maybe you really do need a ribbon cable to increase the distance between the LCD controller and your one driver board. You can find those at Digikey.com or Mouser.com. You just need to measure the contant pitch and count the number of contacts.

?
I'm part of that 1st group in that the ribbon needs to be extended and I have two boards on the panel. What do you mean it is here? Where? Can I buy an extended ribbon? Or do I have to manually extend it?

use the force, Luke...
See that little bar up above, toward the right, that says "search". Just click on that, then enter "FFC extender" in the search terms box, without the quote marks. You should get a bunch of threads to look at. They will tell you everything you need to know about extending your FFC. No soldering required, and only about $6, plus shipping.
