Experiences with SEAS Excel C16N001 Coaxial Driver anyone?

Hello everyone.
Hope you are doing fantastic.

So a while ago i found a pair of the Excel C16N001 coaxial driver and bought them cause i could not resist the price and always wanted to try them.
However, i am not good with x-overs so i started looking online to find any successful Kit and found literally only 2….
One is by german magazine Hobbyhifi and one is by Seas themselves. There also are very few if any projects i could find using it.
It`s like the Driver completely went and stayed under the Radar.

Looking at the Frequency plot i find it awful. However in the german magazine which is pretty serious so i trust their opinion
they describe it as „the spacial projection abilities of these speakers are rare“ as if the speaker is amazing.
I am aware that many times measurements dont say the whole truth and that coaxial speakers are a world of their own cause of the disadvantages
of the tweeter being embedded inside a moving waveguide.

That said, i am trying to calculate if it is worth the fuzz or i should sell them again. I know you might think „just build a speaker and test them“
but at present my life is structured in a way where i could only afford the time to build one project and i would prefer to build something
that i have a few more informations about.

I would appreciate any feedback

What's the speaker you want to build with it and how is your listening situation?
The wonky frequency response is only on axis. In a normal living room you sit 100% in reverberant field and frequency responses on and off axis average. So there is a fair chance you can build a good sounding speaker with it when listening conditions are right.

But I stopped playing with seas coaxes, esp the expensive ones. KEF is able to also have the on axis response right and very wide off axis tweeter response - they are better drivers. So - I would sell it cuase when I KNOW there is something better out there the hunting doesn't stop ...

This does not necessarily sound like „Monitor“ quality for me tbh.
I would prefer an „as flawless as possible“ linearity response before hoping that my room will save me.
What i would like to build…. Hmmm
A very small monitor to accompany my Sub. It will only play down to 80-90hz so the Seas could do this in 5 closed liters.
I am sitting nearfield. So the speakers are around 80-100cm from my ears.
"playing with seas coaxes, esp the expensive ones.“ i think the same. But i got these for 240 a pair. This is not that expensive anymore imho.
KEF. Interesting. Where did you get the Drivers? I did not know they sell OEM Drivers?

However i am thankful for the input but am searching for opinions by people who actually build something with them.
Ideally also with some measurements of the Designs and not Estimates of how it could sound.

Hi,
I own five of them for a small HC system.
The driver is very good for the woofer but the response of the tweeter is very perfectible, a disaster ?
I use them for the center channel in 15L closed box, and rear/front 20L with a passive radiator SB16PFCR00, the SP18R works too.
I experiment several crossover but I keep the simpler. I attach some images. I think this driver works better in a 3 ways.
The seas kit : SEAS JOY
Files attach : Hobby HiFi kit. My crossover in a 20L box PR, 23cm width.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for the info.

"The driver is very good for the woofer but the response of the tweeter is very perfectible, a disaster ?“
so how do you perceive it i nreal life. Do you hear something weird in the high freq response ?
And also what happens when you turn it louder? I heard one coaxial years back and it completely changed character when pushed louder.
Sounded almost like „flanging“

In the treble I perceive a lost of precision, compared to other speakers, a lost of level and sound thin in higher treble. But you don't miss the message.
At high level you a have a compression of the sound. But the speaker is very impressive, a very large bandwidth (F3 40Hz) in a so small box.
This speaker definition is high, not the best I own compare to my 3 ways and the magnesium cone sound is very neutral.
