Hi guys.
A friend has handed me a pair of home built (by the previous owner) subs to "fix".
I would like your thoughts and suggestions please.
Each cabinet is ~43 ltr sealed.
Each cabinet contains;
1x Bass driver - Peerless 830844 - XXLS 12"
1x Plate amp - oAudio 500w bash (Version with externally adjustable subsonic filter).
My winisd simulations shows the current sealed setup as extremely far from optimal.
After a little playing around, to me it looks like they would be better of as ported. (Passive radiators are beyond his budget)
So I'm looking at a 100mm port of ~600mm long (longer if I can fit it in) to give a tuning of around 27hz.
The other issue to keep in mind is his main speakers already have 13" focal bass drivers.
Thus making it hard to try and make these peerless subs contribute.
So, does anyone have thoughts or suggestions for improvements on this ?
Thanks 🙂
EDIT.
winisd shows the 100mm port as being acceptable for air speed, and 175wrms should take the driver to its xmax limits.
Port would be placed on the bottom of the enclosure which should help with port noise too.

I thought the whole rationale for the O-Audio amp was the parametric EQ, is it not being utilised correctly?
Yes it has the single parametric.
How can I put this diplomaticly.
If it's his TT cartridge, he'll spend weeks happily adjusting.
Everything else is 'voodoo' and gets ignored.
One sub has a rattle that he couldn't find even after pulling the driver and looking.
I found the separated spider/cone within 10 seconds of me pulling the driver.
Some just cannot recognise what others see so easily.
I include myself in that 🙂
And I wonder if the basic system can't be improved so as to require minimal processing.

So I guess that DSP is "Voodoo" in this instance? Not that I have any experience there my first foray into DSP will start when my first processor gets here next week. Depending on the model a Focal 13" woofer would have enough bass to please my ears even
I model in Jeff Bagby and it looks to be OK with a broad Q and 12dB at 30hz X-Max plus 10% at 350watts

I'm not sure if I'd classify that bash plate amp as having dsp.
It certainly has a few useful adjustments though.
Normally I'd agree that the main speakers would be enough to satisfy most people.
But some always want more. Some more than more...
I have no idea of the model of focal 13" as it's not a focal system.
He did say (if that can be relied on or not) that the focals are supposedly the ones used in the focal utopia's.
With these subs, my other concern is that in their current guise, if you use the oAudios controls to get to where he wants, then I'm thinking he'll be pushing a lot of power into the xxls.
Um, He likes volume. Way more than my ears can tolerate.
Hence why I'm thinking if I can improve what the box/driver can do without processing, it might have a chance of a longer, happier life.
One sub has broken the glue bond on the spider / cone joint.
But I'm not sure if thats old age, heavy use, glue failure, etc...

The amplifier only has a single notch filter so its not sufficient to equalise the subs. Why not just buy a whole system equaliser of some kind?

Earlier the OP says he has severe budgetary restraints. From memory tho the big 500 watt O-Audio plate amp has both frequency and "Q" adjustments of the inboard parametric EQ

FWIW/FYI, AFAIK the only ~13" Focal from the early Utopia days is the 12V726S, a tough 'act' to follow as you noted: Subwoofer Focal 12V726S specifications.

With all the different things he talks about....
It turns out it's not to be used with his 'main' speakers, rather with a pair of ribbons that each have a pair of ported seas er18's.
Obviously comparing the two, the ribbon system has far less bass than the main speakers.
That being said, Porting, stuffing, and then correctly adjusting the two separate subs should be (I'm theorising) a massive improvement over what they are now.
Short version, getting the sub enclosures prepped to take ports again is proving to be a major PITA.
They were originally ported, then later sealed off with 5 internal layers of 25mm ply/mdf/ply/mdf/ply.
I've managed to get the extra added in timber out of the first cabinet so it's ready for a port to go in.
Second cabinet is fighting me harder.
I suspect the original owner did the alterations based on faulty advise.
Oh well. Another day of lateral thinking and effort might have the second cabinet ready for stage two (installing ports).........
