EV SH-1512ER horn diaphragm and more

Hello, this is my first posting here.

Sorry if this seems like a long post 🙂

I have a pair of EV SH-1512ER. The tweeter diaphragm (old one with smooth backside) were blown in one of the speakers when I got them, so I replaced it with an aftermarket one from Ebay.

The sound of the aftermarket diaphragm is very different from the original one. The aftermarket one is a lot less efficient than the original. I tested this by cranking the speakers and compensating by raising treble from about 2khz and up by 3-6db which actually made it sound quite close to the original one.

Q1:
Is there any place where I can order the original factory EV diaphragm?
OR is there any way to compensate by changing components in the crossover filter?

Q2:
One more thing, someone on this forum said back in 2012 that there were lots of mods to these speakers, can anyone point me to a page or outline of these mods?

Q3: What kind of sub goes well wth these boxes?

Thanks,
~Olav

Did you contact EV directly to ask if they could provide the part or where you could source it? They are a division of Telex, but remain an independent entity.

Looks like the common EV 81514XX diaphragm. Instead of ebay, try a real EV parts seller. Parts Express looks to be out, Midwest Speaker repair has them, I used to stock them, but don't think I have any currently.

But before that, make sure whatever burnt out the original diaphragm didn't also damage the crossover?

Here is the crossover circuit:

Note the PTC part in series with the tweeter, that could be burnt out. and reduce the output. The 5 and 10 ohm series resistors could be damaged, the cap could be damaged.

Thanks for the answer

All I can find is the one with ridges on the plastic, not the one that is smooth around, there are two types. I will contact EV about it.

I will also check the crossover for faulty components. The resistor is easy, but how do I check the PTC?

PTC goes up in value as you heat it. Or as it self heats really. Has a low cold value. Remember it has the 10 ohm in parallel.

COmpare to the good crossover.

What number is stamped on the back of your driver? Hopefully 833-0990. If not, what is on other side speaker driver?

Thanks for your efforts Enzo.
These speakers sound really good compared to what I am used to.
A couple of questions: What does EXPORT mean, and under the column "repair kit" it says nothing, does that mean there is no original driver available?

Export to me means that they used a different driver for units made for export to other countries, the main listing would be for USA units. I suspect the 81514XX is still the proper diaphragm, but suggest verifying that through EV.
