So that it can fit under a home theatre screen, just for dialogue, *not music (eg imaging not important) - how would it be putting a "centre" ESL on it's side? on the floor or close to it?
I believe Quad say they are ok against side walls, which this would approximate . . .

I dont understand why imaging is not important-especially for the center channel...but you can pretty much lay and esl on its side. You will just lose the vertical dispersion. It would be the same as laying a tradtional speaker on its side.

From the center channel I want not precise location, but clarity of dialog.
The alternative is have them in the normal vertical positin, resulting the top 15-20% of the panels behind the hard screen (optimised for reflectivity, rather than sonically transparent). This would roll of the highs to some extent . .

I've been wondering whathever happen to you and you endeavour, the home brew ESL panels.
I'm asking because if you remember I sent you a disc with
instructions of how to build the panels, was it useful to you?

Hey jmateus,
I think about you from time to time regarding how nice you were to send that cd. I have not had the kahoonas so to speak to actually take the steps of trying to build my own esl's. I decided to start my DIY obsession (which it is now) with the LM4780 chip amps. I have now just completed one that is capable of bi-amping the ML ascent i's.
The chipamps were very challenging for me at first although I have learned a great deal. Honestly, I fear that my knowledge is not where it needs to be to "safely" build the ESL's. And since death is not good for project completion, I have been stalling!LOL
I have also heard of several people completing ESL projects only to report lower than satisfactory results! Seems like it could be a waste of time and money, especially considering my knowledge deficiency.
Anyway, I wish that I could hook up with you (or someone) several weekends in a row or something to aid my inexperiance. I still have much to learn regarding Ohm's law even. For example: what resistors/capacitors to use in crossovers to achieive desired outcomes.
I still have that cd. Maybe if you build another pair, I could build with you via online. Like a correspondence college course?? LOL
Maybe we could even cut on part costs and I would try to compensate you here and there for your help of course! What do you think??

I think you may have several options that need to be ruled out before you go laying the center on its side.
First, can you raise the screen so that it is above the speaker in its traditional stance?
Second, can you replace your screen with one that has good sonic transperancy that will allow you to place the speaker directly behind the screen?
Third, talking about %, how much of the ESL would be effectively blocked? Are we talking about the top 3 inches of a 40 inch by 10 inch ESL?? If so, I would just try it and see. The results may not differ as much as they would by laying the speaker down. You may have to choose the lesser of 2 evils!?
By the way, do you have a pic or link to the type of ESL you will be using for the center? I would really like to see it.
