A search on the home theater forums for 'house curve' should give you some reading for an evening. Most people use digital parametric eq to acheive this.
Sounds a bit unrealistic on music, but for film is ok..

Everyone has their own curve which they enjoy,let alone the fact that our hearing is abit different. Even though we cant hear it,the SPL is still there,which is why you feel it.
